Cool Rob, now you can get everything exactly the way you want. A long process, but it will be worth it. Kudos for starting such an ambitious project!

I love your idea of doing it one step at a time. There's an old Indian (from India) saying, "how do you eat an elephant? the answer is, one spoonful at a time".
I'm pretty sure the old Indians used their fingers to eat, but "spoonfull" sounds better than "fingerfull". Stan

Hey Rob, great to see a Riveria like that being reborn. The canvas can be a bit of a trick, looks like you have a shop this winter. How many vans do you have now, three?

Let me know when you are going to do the canvas repair/replacement, I will need to know how to do that in a couple of years. Stan

Here is the first update of this build. You may not notice that anything has been done but I decreased part of the engine compartment and also used some acid on some rust in hard to get at places. I think I'm gonna por15 the whole compartment. .

Unless POR15 comes in white, I would highly recommend you NOT doing that Rob. Besides, the engine compartment for the most part(other than the battery tray) is not where these tend to rust. That nice warm engine keeps it mostly dry. I would save the money for POR15 on the underside of the front floor or the behind the front wheels. Just my $.02. Also, something that Mitch told me, and I don't know if it applies here totally, but when acid is applied it is hard to wash away entirely. Mitch said that he has seen cars dipped, then the acid continues to work on the metal long after it has dried(or at least that is how I understood it). Doesn't sound too pleasant. Sorry Rob , I am not trying to be a downer with these comments. On a more positive note from me…the degreasing looks great!

I have heard a lot of people on The Samba saying that POR 15 is not the quality it used to be. I do know once you open the can, it does not stay usable for very long. I would remove the surface rust, neutralize it, and prime it with some zinc rich paint. This will last for years. Black engine compartments in anything but a black vehicle do not look good to me... If you know what colour you are going to paint the bus, get some mixed up and spray away. I have done some compartments with automotive paint in a spray can and it has turned out very well. Smells good too!

POR-15 is intended to be a 1st coat due to its sensitivity to UV, they tell you to prime and paint on top. That said, many use it as a single layer when undercoating a car where the sun don't shine. Maybe painting the entire engine compartment is unnecessary as Russ said, but I don't see why you couldn't do just the battery area and then prime and paint with automotive paint. I agree that black engine compartments aren't so attractive, avoid if you can. Also, I've had success in saving opened tins of POR-15 by re-sealing them right away, so far with the mini can and the pint size. The starter kit is good value and the 4 oz can goes a long way. Recently I used some to help save the outriggers on my '73. por15canada.com/super-starter-kit.html

Hhhmmm thanks for your opinions and ideas. I guess I am not going to do the compartment, as for the acid I am aware of the pitfalls of not cleaning correctly. I have already looked into the cleaning end of it and I will be getting the proper product.

What's that stuff called that you paint onto rusty metal and it chemically changes the rust into some other form of ferrous material and then seals it to prevent further rusting? Then you can safely cover up the rust with bondo or epoxy or something until you sell it to some unsuspecting shmuck. Stan
