This photo of the vw taken about 40 years ago . Some of you can probably tell what year it is. Back in the day (1975 ) , I traded a 1959 Merc pick up for the 1966 twin cab. It came with the usual options - cardboard box of used parts that never got used , and a greasy , dog eared copy of John Muirs How to book. I think it's true that if you're not a mechanic when you buy a vw , you're probably one when you sell it. Had a lot of adventures with it - some were even good- but sad to say she ended up where so many of them did back then , being pushed , pulled or dragged out back to become a place to store our stuff. I know it got sold after a few years , probably for beer and firewood. In the words of Bob Dylan " I was so much older then , I'm younger than that now."

YA I think a lot of those little stools ended up in shops , around campfires or in living rooms. Our's was the house entry stool where we sat to put our shoes on when I was growing up in the Okanagan.

In the early 70s I went to Europe with a couple of friends who had a connection in Germany. The connection turned out to be 2 brothers in Stuttgart who owned a shop that did vehicle under coating .We told them we were looking for a car , they said if we worked at their shop for a couple of days , they' d find a vehicle for us. Our job was clean any smudges from the cars after they did the under coating and we had to drive them to a gas station to get some petrol and then off to the dealership which was just a couple of blocks away. It just so happened when we were there , they were servicing a bunch of new Porsches . Not sure what years the cars are - someone will know. They found us an Opel station wagon ('64 maybe)that we drove for 10 weeks all over Europe . That's me in the photo , looking like Magnum P.I. The photo is from a slide that the image was flipped hence the letters & numbers are backwards.

The big question, were you making "Vroom Vroom!" noises while the photo was being taken? I flipped it around...

Thanks for the flip - that's my better side anyways.
Just a quick story on how life has some odd twists. In the photo taken is Stuttgart , I was about 20 years old. When my dad was 20 , he was already a seasoned veteran pilot flying with Bomber Command during the war. On their 25th. op. , his Lancaster was taken down by a German Night Fighter (JU88) over occupied France. With 3 of the 4 engines set ablaze , he was able to keep control of the Lanc till his crew and then he himself were able to bail from the burning plane . Their target that night was Stuttgart.

Just to close off this chapter , this is the car the brothers found for us. The Opel was a sight down grade from the Porsche , but the price was right at 75 bucks split 3 ways, it fit our budget. Not quite the chick magnet , but hey.

It was probably more comfortable than the Porsche with three of you in it and would have carried way more stuff.

Now the bus in this photo was owned by my wife (before I knew her) It was taken in 1971 in Ann Arbor Michigan. She drove across the states to the west coast. While going through Texas , she was pulled over by a state trooper - probable not for speeding - and he says to her " Little lady , if you're gonna drive through Texas by yourself , you best get you a gun."

That's Texas for you. I landed at the Dallas airport a few years ago to go to a convention a day or so early. I went to the car rental section (forget what company) and rented a car for a couple of days to drive around and explore. When it was time to collect the keys and go out and get the car a rather large black gal told me in the longest drawn out Texas drawl you've ever heard "now y'all member ifn you git pulled over by the law, y'all keep both hands on the steering wheel caus'n if'n y'all don't they can shoot you right through the door. (not sure if she was concerned about me or the car door). She went on to say that "a good look'n white boy like you'd probably git away with it but y'all never know with some of our local good ol boys."
I drove very carefully for two days! Stan
