Sure, rub it in
Rather personal questions Tom... If you must know, I paid $2K for it, sold it For $5K 1+ years later, 2.5 years ago. The purchase price included a delivery to Seattle plus a return trip for me…..so not all profit considering the amount of work done and parts sourced.
As an aside, afterwards it was transported to Oakland for shipping because including transport it was cheaper to have it shipped from there than from Vancouver or Burnaby.
I was thrown a bit of a curve ball getting it to Seattle. On a rainy and cool late summer day I was headed down and while waiting at the border line up(approximately a 1 hour wait) I felt the clutch "twang" as I pushed it in. "Uh-oh", I thought to myself. It continued to feel worse even time I pushed it in. I got right up to the Duty Free shop(the one on the RHS of the road at the Peace Arch crossing) and SNAP! and the clutch pedal went right to the floor. Crap. I put it in first and started it on the slight downhill and proceeded to drive it into the parking lot of the Duty Free. Luckily I was carrying a spare cable and tools, so I was able to change it out. I was missing cardboard to lie on so I used the carpet from inside. However, it didn't save me from getting VERY wet as it was raining pretty good plus, as you probably know, getting one of these cables out and reinstalled while lying on your back tends to be a dirty greasy affair. Once done I was happy, but looked like something the cat dragged in. It was at this point I had to go inside the very clean Duty Free store and enquire as to whether or not they would let me off the hook for not buying something. Why you ask? Well, there is a sign as you turn into the parking lot that says one must buy something there and you will be checked at the exit to make sure. I wanted to avoid getting into some sort of potential altercation so I figured I would go in and explain my situation. When I saw the look of absolute pity(and possibly disgust) on the faces of the pretty sales girls(Russ, you'd like that store ) I was relieved. They just wanted me and my soaked-thru clothes and greasy hands out of the store I think, so they quickly figured out there was nobody actually checking at the exit from the parking lot and I would be okay to go. So it was from then on a damp cold ride to Seattle without another hiccup. Bus ran great. Once in Europe, 2 months later, my buyer was happy with his purchase. As I look at it now though, another one lost. But what is one to do when we all need cash for our next project? A bit of a conundrum in some ways.
