Just got my engine rebuilt only about 500 miles on it Carbs were rebuilt but mechanic couldn't tune them he tried his best but the flat spot in 2nd and 3rd are killing me. Barvarian said bring it in and he'll do his best to tune by ear. Is there any backyard gurus out there that can help a brother out to tune these things. Please and thank you.

Worked up till today went for a cruise and turn signals don't work(they barely worked before cause you would have to hold it in position till turn was complete) I wanted to just put in a toggle switch how could a guy do that does anyone know? I will check bulbs in the day tomorrow.

You had to hold the lever in position before? How does the lever work or feel now? Is that where the problem is perhaps? If how you held the lever made all the difference before then I would start troubleshooting there.

When I hold it now it makes no difference and it was only due to someome giving me some creative hand signals today that alerted me of the problem. The indicator lights do come on in the dash so I just took for granted they were working as always. The dash indicator comes on but no the actual lights.

Then you need to check power/grounds and wires to the lights. I'm assuming the indicator flashes as expected? Even when not holding the signal lever?
If you've got that much going on then installing a toggle switch (a very poor option) isn't likely to get them working.

The dash lights for the turn signals have always been solid they don't flash even when the bus lights worked.

If I remember correctly, '72 buses feature a signal switch that can be repaired if the wiring has broken on the switch. If you had to hold it in position before, this is possible what has happened. You really don't want to do a hack repair to your bus, do you???

Hi gungho75, Not to be a party pooper, but a stand-alone question like this probably doesn't belong in the Type 2 VW Build /Project Vehicles category. I could move it to the Technical Articles and Questions section, but before I do, maybe you would like to devote one thread to your project where you could post all your questions? It would then stay in this section. Just a thought. I am pretty sure you can go back and change the title of this thread to reflect that it pertains to your Bus. If you like the idea I could take any other questions that you have posed and merge them into this thread. If you don't like the idea, I will go ahead and move it to the more appropriate category for Tech Questions. In the last website we had an enthusiastic club member have his own long thread about his adventures in his "new" Hightop Bus. It was entertaining and we all learned from his trials and tribulations too. The last thing I want to do is dampen your enthusiasm, so please keep posting Cheers, Don

Good call Don,
Easier for Gungho and the other readers to follow the plot of a thread specifically for this bus. Sounds like Gungho is fired up and doing lots of works so it would be great for us all to learn from his experiences.
Gungho, your signal issue should be fairly easy to sort out once you start poking around in there. By the time you wired up a strange switch, you could likely diagnose your issue. I just ripped ALL the wiring out of my 74 bus. It was so corrupted by crazy wiring and gadgets installed by previous owners, it could not be saved. I hereby vow to stick with stock wiring diagrams from now till eternity. As Wilford Brimly would say...It's the right thing to do.

Do you have a Bentley manual for your bus? They have really great colour coded wiring diagrams for the early bays. Spend some time studying these diagrams, and you should have no trouble figuring out what's going on.
