Could you not have taped off, run a finger around the oozing silicone, then pulled tape for aesthetic purposes? Used to do it all the time with Sikaflex on the boats.

You know I didn't leave it like that. It was wiped off and smoothed out with finger...

Sooo, I did a bit more work this weekend... Finally got the engine off the stand and down on the floor. First was to remember to install the backing shield, then bolt on the flywheel. Surprisingly my air-cooled specific flywheel holding tool worked just fine on the Toyota.... Then the new overpriced Toyota clutch was installed. Hopefully it will be the smoothest clutch ever!!! Attaching the trans went smoothly as well, despite using the "eyeball" method of aligning the clutch disc when tightening the pressure plate. Here the complete power unit is ready for installation. And there it is in position. Did it by myself, and managed to do it without injury to myself or the car... Bonus. Still need to install things like radiator, power steering pump, axle shafts, etc... Spent most of my time today on interior work, putting the dash and console back together. Then the camera battery died and I seem to have misplaced the charger... Did get a picture of the fuel pump and mounting assembly being swapped. Note the Paseo unit on the right has a sensor for low fuel level. This has been installed in the Tercel, as the replacement instrument cluster features a low fuel light and I want it to work. I was surprised to find the harness wire to accommodate this feature was already in place. Later Tercels (1993) deleted this feature from the harness and must be added later. A benefit that Rebecca's car was an early production version, I guess... It WILL be running later this week... Or else...

So a few more things to do. The Paseo axle shafts were cleaned up and painted, as you would expect. These had to be installed before the transmission could be filled up with gear oil. More time than I wanted to was spent cleaning loose paint off of the radiator, and straightening out some bent cooling fins. Then some fresh high temp paint was added. I reused the Tercel rad, as the Paseo part was quite rotten. All the power steering parts including pump, hoses, and reservoir were cleaned and reinstalled. Cleaning the inside of the reservoir was not on the fun factor and required a bunch of tweaked Q-tips... The majority of the dash swap was completed as well, with the best parts used from both cars. Note the completed standard transmission swap... And check out the ICE! The complete Paseo entertainment system was installed. No doubt high tech in 1992. This will eventually be replaced when the new speakers/sub/amp is installed later... So would it actually start after all of this???

Sooo, the previous video proves it actually runs. Once up to operating temperature, I verified the thermostat opened properly, followed after by the radiator fan engaging. Then the engine was shut down, and the computer put into test mode. This is done by connecting two terminals in the test socket together. Then the ignition timing and idle speed can be set. The above picture shows the timing light set up and waiting for action. At first the engine had a tendency to stall after being revved up. This was due to the timing being slightly retarded which lowered the idle speed too low. Once the timing was set to 10 Degrees BTDC, everything was fine. Now I would like to say that the engine initially started first time after turning the key, but that would be stretching things a bit. In fact at first it would not start as there was no fuel pressure. This was traced to the fuel pump relay not energizing. Given the amount of parts and wiring I replaced to do this conversion, I was worried that a boo-boo of some sort was made. In fact I had to re-remove some of the dash panels to access the fuel pump relay, which is well buried on this car, and this did not make me too happy. Replacing the Paseo relay, with the identical Tercel relay, soon had things back in action. It did take a long time to purge all air from the fuel lines and fuel rail/injectors. Once this was done, it started immediately every time. Like it should. Anyway the meat of this project is now done, and it is now time to move onto some other aspects including swapping better condition seat-belts over, and putting the front end back together. Also I still have to decide if I am really going to replace the interior for the Paseo items. There may be some issues on whether the back seat is really compatible or not... So far the Paseo has given up its engine, transmission, axles, engine wiring harness, dashboard, dash wiring harness, fuel pump and sender, transmission controls, shifter, clutch and brake pedal clusters, clutch master and slave cylinders, radio, dash panels, console, steering wheel, light switch, instrument cluster, and alternator stator, to the Tercel project. Because of this, my co-workers have suggested a new name for this vehicle. Behold, the 1991/92 Toyota "TERSEO". Works for me. I guess...

Another good documentary by Russ! 😎 Probably more time spent just on typing , taking pictures and editing than most of us mere mortals spend on our actual projects!!! 😏
