For some reason I have got it in my head that I'd like to have representations of my past VW's in my toy collection. Just one problem, the toy companies have never come around to consult me on what my past VWs have looked like. So I have had to take matters into my own hands and try to cobble together and come up with some reasonable facsimiles. First the faded Ruby Red 62 Single Cab. Some years ago, Johnny Lightning put out a 1:64 scale model that was pretty close, but they put ugly red wheels sans hub caps on it. Funnily enough this is quite close to what the truck looked like when I got it(except it had hub caps). I found some white rims with hub caps on a similar JL SC so I set about switching the wheels. This turned out to be a rather difficult task involving my Dremel and a dental carbide bit to free the axles from the diecast base(the crimps were very tight to the axles). Unfortunately I didn't think to take any pics. But this is how it turned out... The red rims really needed to be put back on a slammed SC though, so a flipped base and glued axles(yes it still rolls) were in order...

Nope! Haven't quite been that adventuresome with the Dremel. I don't think I'd be a real big fan of driving lowered 1:1 Buses because I would tend to to hit my head getting in....then again, I've never driven one, so maybe not. I do kinda like the looks of them lowered, so the cheap way is to have a toy to look at of one. I did so to the white SC above, and now here is a Panel. I had a double so I just went for it. It requires flipping the base over and some careful grinding here and there. Then it comes out looking like it is dragging its rear bumper, so a tweaking of the base is in order. Of course when tweaking, the darn thing breaks and a blob of epoxy (or JB Weld) has to come to the rescue. I had epoxy on hand. Make sure the axle is aligned side to side! I lose the engine detail, but who ever looks at the bottom?

I think Don would put knobby tires on ANYTHING if he could... Funny that you should say this some time ago Russ. I do believe I have a certain penchant for doing so... I was trying to clean up my toy bench yesterday, and I had an idea. It came to me when I was contemplating taking three models out of their display packaging. One definitely needed to go into the display case, but the others I was unsure of. This is a corner of the packaging...I am sure some of you have this particular set in your stuff In it came a Dodge D100, looking very similar to the Fargo I did some learning to drive on. Ours had a light blue metallic paint job, a canopy that seemed to weigh a ton, and white wagon wheels. So this model does conjure up some feelings of nostalgia. But that camper is rather large for my liking on this 1:64 scale model. Also in the set is this late Bay Westy with its top popped. It's okay I guess, and I did refurbish one in 1:1 scale( miacvw.proboards.com/thread/27/don-late-bay-latest ) . The model's wheels are cutting it for me, but more on that later... I also had a Green Matchbox 1:59 scale Bus that has some sort of Sportsman type top on it that I never liked very much. Since I did not take a pic, here is a pic of one in orange And here is how I know it is 1:59 scale...it says it right on the base. Not a common thing! So you know those Splitty "snail" camper and Bay Karmann and Gypsy camper conversions? Well I did some measuring and thought a model version was in order. First, chop off the back of the roof... Then decide on a set of wheels/tires, because you know with the camper weight, stock rims/wheels ain't gonna cut it. Luckily the set also came with a Jeep! Of course the wheels had to come off and their track width narrowed. The VW's axle holders had to drilled out to accept the larger axles too. Here's the Jeep, sans wheels Finally set about measuring, cutting, test fitting, measuring, cutting, test fitting.....a process that seemed to go on for way too long. And just before throwing the whole thing into the trash bin because you realize you are wasting too much time on a toy for your collection, it all comes together The Monster Gypsy Bay For comparison. Mild lift, no rub though So what to do with the Jeep? Crush it....

Very nice. So when are you starting on the full-size version??? I do have a Bus with a dented roof. Hmmmmmm.... Nah, too much work at the moment. Now I am quoting myself...oh boy that's is a first... Anyhow next on the block was this sagging Solido 1:19th scale Split Bug. I could restore it, but modifying is more fun. They are only toys after all. I found this Hot Wheels Drag Bus chassis in my crap and the wheelbase looked similar... Time to mark and cut and see if it fits.. Getting closer.. Well that looks a bit goofy Time to affix the chassis in place The rear inside rear fender wells are holding me back Cure? Cut them out. Looking pretty thin! Now it fits! Vrooooom!
What next for this mash-up? Time will tell.....

I likey. You are not allowed to paint it lime green, though. Don't worry, I don't have your penchant for that colour(check out Russ' Tonka restos and restomods here: miacvw.proboards.com/thread/283/more-tonka-restorations-pictures-restored?page=1 ). I have a scheme in mind. I just have to get my garage "fume hood" figured out before I can proceed... I can't stop looking at that Don. So Cool. I will defiantly have to tub my 68 for Huge slicks when the time comes. Sounds cool! Is "defiantly" versus "definitely" a Freudian slip referring to the haters?
