This is the 38th annual Seattle Vintage Meet happening this weekend! Heading down there tomorrow for the fifth year in a row, and looking forward to it! One change this year, is the grand prize raffle. Would you believe a 1967 Squareback with a new engine? Think I might have to buy a few tickets this time, which must be redeemed in person at the show. Can't beat those types of odds. Would be kind of hard to explain that one at the border, however... Anyway the thread is now started, and pictures will be added once we return...

Made it down to Seattle with no issues. Managed to just make it on the 7:45 out of Duke Point and make it thru the border with far fewer hassles than last year. Nice ferry ride. No field of Porta Potties, but there was the ever-present Tulip stack at Burlington Unusually we flew thru Everett, with hardly any stop and go. Must have been that earlier ferry... We were among the first to show up, with only three VWs at first including us. More kept coming and it was a pleasant evening. Didn't get a pic of Russ chowing on his much anticipated burger, but here is where we were(University District)

After a very long day, we finally arrived home on the last ferry from Tsawwassen last night. Don was bummed out we missed the earlier ferry, because he had to be at work in the morning. I didn't this time, so naturally I found this amusing... Anyway the trip was great, and 140 new pictures are currently loading to IMGUR as I type this...

Sooo, here we go! The first series of pics are taken at the Friday Burger Meat. (yes that is how they spell it...) Anyway we encountered almost no traffic for a change, and arrived earlier then expected. No matter, the VW's rolled on in eventually... The first pic was of an early Ghia. Except it wasn't what it appeared to be. Up close revealed a '72 late model, with earlier bumpers and hubcaps "adapted". Well it looked OK from a distance at least... A nice Oregon based Riviera was parked next to me. There were LOTS of Riviera camper vans at this event, and this was one of the nicest. Another high top was present, this time an Adventurewagen. These ones have odd looking tops that stick out the back. The interior was nice, with some Vanagon fittings installed. The owner explained in detail the aerodynamic advantages of the Adventurewagen top to Don, but he remained skeptical. My eyes had already glazed over somewhat by then... Don can't go anywhere without patting a dog, and this friendly one in the back of a '67 Beetle was irresistible Continued...!

This was a genuine Manx, and a nice example of a traditional buggy. That odd coloured Beetle in the background looked like it was painted with a metallic coat applied with a roller. Really! I hadn't seen this Oval previously. I kinda liked the dual pinstripe tires on this '59. It had a heavy dose of patina, like many at the show... This grey early square window Beetle looked quite nice. A couple more of the many patina machines at the show... Continued...

This splitty reminded of the LEGO bus. More pictures of it to come at the main show... This was one of the cleaner Beetles in attendance. "None of that stinking patina stuff here!" An unrestored '71 bay rolled into the parking lot... This '65 Ghia was getting a lot of attention with that slammed and narrowed front end. Spot all the goodies in the interior... Had a big engine too, as you would expect... I liked this very retro looking buggy too. Continued...

This split was straining under the weight of the roof top tent/tank, and whatever the back thing was up on the roof. All of the items were made by the same company as well... This 1970 Beetle was all original, and featured a roof rack full of the usual crapola. Except that oil can used to be previously owned by Don, so that made it somewhat cool. -Ish. Didn't catch the year of this panel bus, but was likely just after the barndoor era. Non-poptop Westfalias are not all that common. Isn't orange an awesome colour??? This split looked "orig" at first, but in fact had a lot of extensive modifications. Note the late bay wheels hiding there... This Java green '67 was looking good. Didn't smell good, as there was a fuel leak somewhere... Continued...

Now here we have a 1967 Squareback that was fairly original. You know I liked those era correct whitewall tires, and it had the seemingly mandatory roof-rack as well. Interior was original too, and was dripping with rare options as well. Why was I so interested? Because this was the car that was the grand raffle prize for this year. Yes you could buy tickets at $5 a pop and win this car! Ticket sales were brisk, and you had to be in attendance at the main show to actually win it. Those are pretty good odds... Don liked this '65 Ghia, as it was the same colour as the one he once owned. it was in OK condition and was for sale as well. The same car was present the next day at the swap-meet, with a sign saying he was taking offers. So no idea of what he thought it was worth, then... The Burger Meat portion of the show was great, and that evening we stayed with Steve, who has been one of the stalwart members in the Cascade Kombis club for years. The next day we were up bright and early, and headed off to the main event at Shoreline Community College located just outside of Seattle city limits. Don and I immediately headed off to the swap-meet to see what we could score... For some reason, I kind of liked this old camper. Was one of many in the swap area. The swap was fantastic, with lots of vendors present. I didn't buy a lot of actual parts, but was able to find some vintage toys and literature as usual... Lots of others were carrying out their "treasure" as well. Continued.

Spotted in the swap area, was this reputed mostly original '51 split. A little rough around the edges, but undeniably cool! Some interior shots of an early Beetle were requested, so hopefully these work. Pretty sure Don took some too. This car was the only "stock" split window Beetle present this year. One of the swap-meet vendors, was selling off his extensive collection of vintage VW toys. And he had LOTS of them. I liked these tin-plate Beetles, but the prices were too rich for me. Check out this minty tin plate Notchback. I loved it, but at $300 US, it wasn't going to come home with me. Incidentally, the seller of these items was a very high pressure guy who was really pushing himself hard to make sales. A bit too high, as later the paramedics had to treat him for likely dehydration in the hot sun. Bet that cut into his profit margin... One other swap-meet note, is that for the first time I spotted decent type 3 front fenders for sale. Unfortunately they were all for early cars, needed a lot of repairs, and were still $275 each. Bummer. Continued.

Now onto the show proper, we started off with a few water-cooled's. This is a European specification high-top Westfalia camper. Even if you don't like high-tops that much, the interior in these models are very bright and open inside with tons of room. This one may have had an engine swap of some kind. Later Eurovan camper was pretty fancy too. Our host, Steve, owns this fairly rare Carat. This one has had a built Subaru transplant, and goes very well. We have had a couple hair-raising rides in it now. And if you lust for something like this, Steve will happily sell it to you for around $19,000. USD of course... One of the many Riviera campers in attendance. They must of sold a lot of this model in the Pacific Northwest at that time... You couldn't really get lower than that... Our transport to Seattle this year was the Restfalia. It ran just fine and dandy the whole trip, so was happy about that. Man, those are some big ass hills in Seattle! A '72 Westfalia in that unusual mustard colour... My camera must have balked at taking a picture of this bus. Probably due to the Ford V6 in the back... Continued...

As you might expect, there were a lot of split buses in attendance. This was obviously one of the shiny ones. Actually, shiny seemed to be more prevalent than patina this year, at least with the split bus crowd. A ginormous roof-rack, and not a single thing on it. Amazing! This is the "LEGO" bus again. Very nicely restored it was. Simple, yet tidy interior. Very nice. Funky driving lights on this old double-cab. Here is that modified split again. Appears nicely done. Just another Deluxe Microbus... With stock type interior. Wonder how many people actually load up their bus with passengers to capacity... This split was a bit special, being a double door camper. Note the awnings on each side. Their display was quite involved too. MMM, coke. We have now reached the halfway point for the photos. Continued later, because it is time for a nap...

I didn't this time, so naturally I found this amusing... It's all good. I actually arrived home early......THE NEXT DAY! I drove home the highway until I got to Morden at which point road work and the cops decided to reroute traffic on a "detour" thru Cedar, so all the way back and then around I went Then my wife had to get up and leave the house at 5:15. Oh man, it was a long day today....

Yet another nice split camper. Shiny was definitely "in" this time. Decent bus looked pretty plain compared to all those Deluxes and campers. Can't say I have ever seen a stinger on a bus before... Another shot of the raffle prize, '67 Squareback. This car formerly belonged to a club member that bought it for her son. Despite being warned to check the oil, he didn't, and ruined the engine. Mommy had it fixed then decided that selling it was the better course of action. It was for sale for quite some time too, but nobody seemed to want it. The club payed around $5000 US dollars for it, and I am sure ticket sales covered the purchase price... And no, I didn't win... Yet another deluxe bus, this time without sunroof or skylights. Apparently quite a rare model... This Formula V, was a neat old race car. A few in the cabriolet section. Both black ones are the final Epilogue triple black editions. Continued.
