Sooo, this event is happening again in Nanaimo tomorrow (May 9). Once again, the info about it is via Facebook. Please look here for the details of the route for this event: www.facebook.com/events/559602384693378/The time is 6:30 pm start from the Southgate Tim Horton's parking lot (our regular meeting place). Remember meetings??? Once again the organizers stress no getting out of your cars, and no burnouts or acting stupid. You just know all of this will actually happen... Last time this event was held, they had a good turnout of @130 cars. About that have said they will come again, and the same number more MIGHT participate. I am not sure if I will go this time, but am thinking about it... Anyone else going???

Sooo, although I did not participate in this event, I did manage to get some pictures of what was going on. I also learned that my old camera is not ideal when taking pictures of moving objects. Or more likely I just don't know how to use it properly... Anyway I staked out a spot near my house and waited for the cruise to go by. And it was worth it... First up was this nice '68 Camaro. Obviously I hadn't figured out the camera settings yet, but this got better. I have a soft spot for '68 Camaros, as Mommy had an RS convertible when I was VERY young. Too bad that one got sold... Then a Model A Ford followed by a later modified "shoebox" Ford (1949-51 models). Then what looks like a LandRover, but isn't. This is the much rarer Austin Gipsy, which was more technically advanced then the LandRover, but was twice the price. The British Military chose to stick with the cheaper but effective LandRover instead. The Gipsy was all steel and rusted away, while the LandRover's body panels were alloy and lasted much longer... I hadn't seen this late '60's Falcon before. The last ones were pretty plain cars and were basically replaced by the Maverick. If you can't identify this as a '57 Chevrolet Bel-Air, then you need to give your head a shake The British car clubs did a great job of supporting this event. There were LOTS of MGB's on the cruise, and a few Triumphs, including this early TR2? I believe... Continued...

This Chevy Nova was quite nice, and like most of the V8 cars on the cruise was very loud. Lots of rumping going on! One of several Corvettes on the cruise, followed by one of the many MGB's. It is surprising how many of them have survived, but then it is possible to buy brand new body shells for them. Imagine if we could do that for our VW's??? I like big 'ol' Pontiacs, and this one qualified. Looks like a '68 Parisienne to me. Early Chevelle looked good too. Again, not a quiet car! Now something I liked. Datsun 510's are cool, and have been so for a very long time now. This one sounded very sweet when he took off from the intersection... Don would probably like this big old Jaguar ready for the rallies... Continued...

The '63 1/2 Ford Galaxie looked pretty nice. Except where are the whitewalls??? Cars like this pretty much ALWAYS had whitewall tires when they were new. Looks naked without them... Triumph TR6 was looking good on it's Minilite type wheels. This generation of GM trucks have acquired the nickname "squarebody" for obvious reasons. They are becoming VERY popular nowadays. Early Falcons like this '65 were great looking cars. They were available with 260 cid V8's, later 289's just like the Mustang. And of course the Mustang was based on the Falcon underpinnings... I quite like these '80's Supra's. These Toyota models where well built and long lasting. Except those rear hatches that rusted to nothing... Continued...

Next up is Boyd's '55 Buick Century on air suspension. Boyd is one of the hot rod guys I know, and his Buick is a crowd pleaser. And tonight's useless trivia is why did Buick name it the Century? Because it was capable of a honest 100 miles per hour. On drum brakes and bias ply tires too. That would be exciting... Here is an early Chevy II/Acadian. This is a good example of how taking away the chrome on a '60's car ruins it looks for me. Not a fan, but then that is my opinion... MMM, I do like '68 Firebirds. An "HO" version too, but didn't catch what engine it had. Some had the unusual over head cam six cylinder engine with timing belt. Pretty sure this one ran a V8. And here is a classic original style Mini. Not one of those bloated ugly new MINI things. The modern Countryman models are absolutely hideous! This was one of two dune buggies on the cruise. I have done some work to this one in the past... And here is the other one. Did manage to snag an extra picture of this one... A '69 Camaro Z28 in bright orange. If it is a real Z28, then it would be quite rare... Unfortunately I botched the picture of the VW camper following... See what I mean? Didn't recognize this bus either. Looked quite decent... This beast is a Buick "Boat-tailed" Riviera. Don should look that up This looks like a chopped-top 1940 Chevrolet to me... Lance was cruisin in his late Westfalia. Apparently it has air suspension in it now... A lot more of these Rabbit pickups or Caddy's to use the European name have survived then I would have thought. This '66 full size Chevrolet had lots of modifications. This 1960 Falcon had been turned into a "gasser" drag car, and sounded and went much better then it looked. And I wasn't going to let this 1967 Cougar get by me without a picture. I owned one of these for 19 years... There were a LOT of JDM cars on the cruise. This was one of three Skylines; it had nice paint but stupid levels of camber. Yes I would like to wear my tires into nothing quickly. Duh. I liked this Mini, but failed to get a decent picture... Another crappy picture. But what kind of car is that??? An Innocenti Mini. Basically a rebodied original style Mini built in Italy. Initially they used the standard BMC engines, but the last versions used Daihatsu 3 cylinder engines. This one sounded quite good. It is not often a car completely stumps me. This big JDM wagon had all its badges and emblems removed, and I really don't know what it is. The tailights looked Honda-ish, but I don't really know... And finally one of the last vehicles on the cruise was this VW bus, last seen at the 2019 Bug Jam up in Courtney. Hope you all enjoyed these pictures. These types of events are likely all we are going to have for sometime, so they need to be supported. There will be more in the future, and I will pass on details when available...

Here is an early Chevy II/Acadian. This is a good example of how taking away the chrome on a '60's car ruins it looks for me. Not a fan, but then that is my opinion... Scrolling through the photos I hit this one and thought "DAMN that looks incredible!" Ditch the chrome, and it totally piques my interest in American iron...which normally doesn't happen. Then I read your comment. hahahaha.

Nice pics thanks. Don't dis camber, I think I told you that in one of our trips back to NFLD in the 74 weekender, the camber on the van's back wheels was way bad, especially since we loaded it down with "stuff" we collected along the way. Have you ever seen the Lucille Ball movie "The Long, Long Trailer"? The fix was simple, we found a sympathetic tire guy somewhere in NFLD, maybe in Dildo Run, that agreed to de-mount our rear tires, reverse them and "bobs yr uncle buy". Stan

So it looks as though there is another one of these Cars for Covid cruises today. The route is somewhat different than before along with the start time. For this event, the start time is 5:15 pm, and the start location is the Cabela's parking lot. For more information and to view the event route, click the following link... www.facebook.com/events/539357950085357/It still looks like this type of event is all we have for car activity for this summer. Large gathering events are not going to be allowed for some time. Again this event does raise some money for COVID research. And if you go, then PAY ATTENTION while you drive. Both of the previous two events have had collisions due to people not watching the car in front of them. I might try to get some pictures again depending on how the day pans out today... Anyone else going to participate???

I'm on call until Wednesday, so my bus won't be insured until after I finish work. I can't afford to be stranded if I have any issues during my first couple of drives.

So the regular Thursday classic car meetup at the A&W in Ladysmith isn't meeting (duh) so this coming Thursday they are going to do a drive by through Ladysmith and Chemainus starting at the A&W at 6pm Thursday night. Some VW representation from those who actually have running vehicles would be nice. It'll go right by my house so I'll try and get some pics for everyone to see. Stan

I considered joining this tonight, but it's pretty wet up here in North Nanaimo and I'm not driving my bus in the rain.
