Wow. I may have to reconsider the future of my projects and just have a rusty static collection of cars I will never drive or enjoy in the name of safety.

So here is a story about welding for you... Many, many years ago when I was still a teenager living at home, my parents decided to go on holiday and left me at home alone. Instead of throwing a party like some would, I decided that it would be a good time to do some welding while Dad was not around... Myself and my good friend Hung, decided that building a big steel support for a free standing basketball hoop would be a good idea. Grandpa had some big old pipes behind his garage and we were welcome to them. Hung scrounged up some plywood for the backboard and an old hoop section and we were on our way.
I had watched Dad weld many things over the years, but had never tried it for myself. It looked pretty easy, so what could go wrong? I was smart enough to wear the old flip style welding helmet, and Hung was smart enough to close his eyes when I fired up Dad's ancient Miller arc welder. Surprisingly the beads I laid down were not that bad, and the pipe framework came together quite well. There was a slight problem that did not manifest itself right away however...
Did I mention my parents were away on vacation? That is because it was in the middle of summer, and it was damn hot. I was smart enough to wear some ratty old coveralls, but without a shirt on underneath. You guessed it, several hours later I was sporting a very angry red "V" down the front of my chest as the arc welding flash burnt my pasty white skin. Hung was highly amused by this...
Anyway I learned my lesson about welding flash and never did anything stupid like that again. And the basketball hoop project? This was installed in Hung's family house driveway, and survived decades of abuse. It was finally removed when the house was sold, so I guess that project was a success of sorts. Now if only I could weld up the 80,000 holes in my first VW in the back yard...

Leave it long enough and you'll have a few big holes instead of lots of little ones. Not sure if that advice helps or not?🤔

My last truck, a 74 Dodge full sized crew cab was driven until one morning I came out and found it "looked funny". At first I thought it had a flat on the right rear, but upon closer inspection it turned out that the frame had rusted through and collapsed. Glad it hadn't happened on the highway. Oops! Stan

I already can't fall asleep without a radio or tv on, due to the tinnitus...I'd rather not have permanent vision issues too. Got Alexa? Tell it to do ocean sounds, or babbling brook. Much better than a radio or tv. Stan

I just listen to the voices in my head. Sometimes they say "KILL, KILL, KILL" but that doesn't bother me much...

No way, not ever with one of those speakers....One day I will probably have to eat those words, but I'll just let "them" track my IP address for now.

My Alexa is also vpn'd and you can shut off the microphone with a simple press on the "kill" switch. That must be what Russ is hearing.
And yes Don I've got lots of great pains, but vpn isn't one of them. The list seems endless and most aren't the physical kind. Stan

The trick to avoiding the nefarious aspects of modern technology such as Alexa's bad stuff which she's undoubtedly capable of, isn't to stick your head in the sand and think you're safe. The real trick to use technology to protect yourself from the bad bits while enjoying the good bits. For example, 5 minutes work reprogramming your router to specify which appliances you want to put on your VPN list will totally protect you from big brother's finger. Just remember, when you bend over to stick your head in the sand you've presented a large portion of your anatomy up in the air which becomes subject to all sorts of attacks many of which are found in a proctologist's text book. I must be safe without any devices whatsoever... That would be a nice thought but no, if you use a credit card "they" know where you are, what you bought, how much you paid and your whole history. A friend of mine in Kimberley got a new girlfriend with a young baby and he started buying diapers. In less than a week he started getting online ads for all sorts of baby stuff. He started getting mail brochures for baby items. Their computers can parse your credit card data in a millisecond and your whole history tells a great deal about you. Every time you go online Google keeps track of all the sites you visit, u-tube videos you watch etc etc etc. Unless you are a vpn user they can track every move you make. The trick isn't to avoid technology, it's to use technology to foil the bad guys. Stan

Hmmm. Good thing I seldom use my credit card... Did buy those wheels for the Terseo via credit. Never seem to get Toyota ads popping up...
