I think this was my favourite split bus... Really nicely detailed in every way it was... You could eat off that engine if you were so inclined... Even the lantern holder was pretty cool. I believe this one won best split, but I am not sure... Or maybe it was this one that won. Prizes were all People's Choice with one award per vehicle type. A far cry from the days when there was first and second trophies, and classes split up between original and modified... There were quite a few splits, and most of them were shiny. See what I mean. Shiny is good. This ratty van was kind of neat with the old TV repair signwriting. TV repair was once a big business for a generation... Continued...

There is Tom and his bus. We had quite a chat, and I bought a nice distributor and carb from him that is suitable for my "someday" Savannah Beige project. It was good to see people in person once again... Don't have a bus and you want to camp? No problem... This Type 3 Karmann Ghia was the ONLY Ghia at the show. Numbers of cars entered were down from that last show in 2019 for sure. Did the new location keep people away? Worries about Covid? High entrance cost? Charging for passengers and spectator parking was a new thing and some were not impressed... The Type 3 turnout was poor as well, but at least HighTopRob brought his Squareback and it ran decently... Reagh brought his dune buggy with a new engine; here he is hanging out with both Robs and someone I don't recognize with a leaf in their face... I liked this dune buggy because I have a thing for those side pods. Not many buggies this year, either... A couple of Things. I couldn't possibly drive either of them, as the orange one has park bench seats, and the yellow one featured seats made from skateboards and license plate floorboards. A might uncomfortable for my aging bones... See what I mean? No thank you! Continued...

Before we get into the Beetles, here are a few water pumpers... The Harlequin edition needs no introduction... There was a row of minty cabriolets, most of them with 1.8 turbo swaps. This red one went whole hog with a VR6 conversion though... Those white cabriolet seats are always a pain to keep clean. This MK2 16V was dripping with era aftermarket options including rare pop-out side glass. Engine and bay were very tidy... Nice to see the early water-cooleds getting some love... Continued...

This car is a rare Fahrenheit Edition GTI that was formerly owned by one of our customers who passed away. The new owner is the right guy to have this extremely low mileage car (around 12,000 km). He has detailed it far better then the factory did and it is like new. Everywhere. The same guy also owned this fantastically detailed Passat. This was one of those models that were once all over the place, and now almost all of them are gone. At least this one should survive for a long time... Ok, this one was over the top. I mean FAR over... Yes this one was RHD and custom built in Japan. It was, uh, an acquired taste for sure. And was for sale. Interested in another RHD VW Mark??? Now onto some Beetles...

The first in the Beetle section. Liked those graphics on the bottom... You know I liked those fatty whitewalls of course... Interior was nice with lots of goodies... Not my favourite, but some of you would probably be into this sort of thing. Cabriolets of this era are fairly rare... I kind of liked this green Beetle. Normally I don't like non-chrome bumpers, but it kind of works here. Didn't mind the inside, either... Another slammed early Beetle. Whitewalls caught my eye once again... I liked the look of this hubcap-less oval window. Kind of neat... Continued...

Hard to tell in these photos, but this oval was Strato Silver, my favourite VW colour of them all. Might still paint something that colour some day... Interior was very nice too, of course. And so was the 36 hp engine. Betcha Terry would approve... There really weren't as many patina type cars as in the past. Shiny definitely was more popular on the show day... Ok, I liked this a lot! This car was featured in the past on this website as a project car, and is a rare Canadian Custom 1200. I will insert a link later for this particular car. And here it is: miacvw.proboards.com/thread/579/elusive-canadian-customs-pictures-restoredThis car is about half way down on the first page. Was once only a block away from my house... The original 1200 is still there and is moving the car along just fine. Nice to see that this one was saved and finished. Good job! A tired looking, but neat old oval window... This is a Nanaimo car, owned by my kids old hockey coach. Nice to see it out and making long trips, too. It is actually a '59 Canadian Standard at heart... And of course Gregg and Rob S made the trek down in their beloved Beetles. The Nanaimo contingent was a bit small this year, but it was nice to see those who were able to make it... There were actually quite a few nice oval windows that made the show... Continued...

This Beetle was FAAAAT with extra widened glass fenders... We were happy to see that Darren took a rare day off from work, and brought down his sweet '64 Beetle. Darren has put a lot of work into this to get it just the way he wants it. Car uses those custom TMI seat covers that they sell. These complete the look Darren was going for, and he is very happy with the results. Actually he grins as much driving his Beetle, as I do when behind the wheel of my orange bus. And my "new" Corvair of course... Forgot this shot from earlier. David is from Nanaimo and is a regular customer with this Vanagon Carat. This is a very sweet van and he won his class as usual... This '68-69 Beetle was spotted in the parking lot, and I liked it quite a bit. Pretend it was metallic green, and that was my old car back in the day... And finally, here is a shot of Reagh, cruising around in his dune buggy. Big smile on his face as usual. It was sure nice to finally have a VW event once again, and we had a good time. See you all there again next year!!!

Thank you Russ it was good to see you guys at the show, I always enjoy your commentary on the cars and your photos, I tried to take some overall atmosphere and ambience pics to complement your selection.
The Restfalia always looks great, looks the same as 15 years ago (above) I like the creative poptop, what did they make it from? Happy Beetles in a field (above) The Nanaimo contingent with a rare pic of Russ, is that a Funbugz T-shirt!? (above) Steve's very original 1973 Westfalia, the awning maybe much later, but it all works perfectly Can't argue with that colour combination (above) Another Riviera. A very attractive Beetle Patina represented in the show Is that the smell of fuel? Rob checks the wagon. Oozing with personality (above) A long view of the bus area, many varied buses, great quality too. Vintage style webbed lawn chair, nice touch I think Rob and Reagh were the only ones to drive around during the show, it was entertaining There they go Isn't that a Japanese shopping bicycle? This one was for sale for $22,000 if I am correct
