Thanks for your patience guys, the forum is a great place for people like me to learn, and I certainly did.

A year and three months and the exhaust stud problem is back again, perhaps not as bad though. The same stud that needed tightening up last year was a bit loose again, except this time it won't cinch up as if there is no thread left in the head. The picture below shows the original bolt and a replacement I bought. The replacement is a bit longer. Neither will go back in, the bolt starts to take then ends up spinning or falling out. Is there a solution to this problem? I didn't abuse the bolt.

Looks like it was holding just by the last couple of threads. I'd try a Helicoil next.

Can I do a helicoil myself without dropping the engine, or would this be better left to a shop?

Yes, Helicoils are easy to install yourself.

Yes, Helicoils are easy to install yourself. Hmmm, I don't know, I'm a bit nervous to be drilling the head. I might leave it up to a pro. I wonder what that would cost at a VW friendly shop?

Helicoils are not too hard to install. The drilling portion is easy because you already have a hole, you are just enlarging it slightly. Genuine Helicoils work very well. There is a knock-off version called "re-coil", and they are not as good in my opinion...

That looks like a great alternative, in the meantime, I tightened up a few of the other J-tube head bolts and the engine runs quite smoothly.

Did you find the Time Serts locally, or order them?

Don, that set of pics is very helpful to visualize how it's supposed to go, thank you. Yet another skill you could be monetizing
