It's a good thing it was an older Ford. My friends have a newish Escape and their son has an F150. They're vying for the most breakdowns and issues. So far the F150 is winning. Tell me it ain't so! I'm trying out "over the air" TV viewing, on a smaller older TV without the benefit of a pvr and as such have been "forced" to watch the occasional commercial. I constantly see Ford bleating about the most popular truck, the most reliable truck, the most powerful truck, the most technologically advanced truck blah blah blah. You mean they are lying to me? Stan I'll take my Tacoma over an F150 any day.

Ok here is my opinion on Ford trucks. A fair number of pickups come in the shop, and I have worked on all of them. Ford F150's with the Triton engines are notorious for the spark plugs snapping off when you try to remove them. GMs and Dodges never, ever do this.... Ford trucks are also the worst for the rear spring shackles and hangers rotting apart. Lousy quality steel is the culprit, and the ford replacement parts are not improved in quality. The Rangers are the worst offender. Think Toyotas don't have problems? Think again. I like Toyotas but the Tacomas are legendary for the frames rusting apart. No excuse for this, Toyota. Use better steel and protect them better. But they won't...

One of the main reasons I have always been a Dodge truck fan is when we lived in Brampton an age ago, we somehow lucked into a VIP tour of a Hamilton Ontario steel mill. We got to visit the immense room where the giant furnaces (each several stories high and a hundred feet in diameter) full of molten steel are, and even got to see one during a "blown plug" operation where the clay plug at the bottom is blown with dynamite letting the molten metal gush out through the channels into the molds. Very impressive, and LOUD!. Anyway as usual I digress. When in the rolling shop we saw the steel being rolled into large very heavy flat rolls. I asked the guide what thickness the steel was and he told us those ones are the thickest, they go to the Dodge truck plant, those ones over there are the thinnest, they are going to the Ford truck plant. Nuff said. Stan

That's why my truck is almost the best of all worlds... GM frame / suspension mated to a Dodge (Cummins) engine with 5spd manual transmission. Only miss is I didn't swap the body for Ford Styling

An early Cummins in a GMC is a nice combo. Of the pickups that come in the shop, the 6.0 L V8 gasoline GMC/Chevrolets generally seem to have the least issues. Except for snapping off exhaust manifold bolts...

Except for snapping off exhaust manifold bolts... Which is much better than the GM diesels that snap the crank in half! (which, incidentally, is why mine got the Cummins swap)

Use better steel and protect them better. But they won't... My Tacoma had a factory recall for that. It got a wax injection into the frame to protect it. To be fair, the only major problem I have had with my truck was the air injection valves that failed a few years ago. It was beyond frustrating at the time, but in they end it was fixed under an extended warranty program initiated a few weeks after I fixed mine. Our 15 year old Matrix was a great car. It had 193k on it when it was written off last month. The only problem was a failed ECU when it was nearly new, which was fixed under warranty and became another recall for Toyota.

Our 2005 Corolla had a few minor problems then the big one. It became obsolete and technically illegal to drive at 299.999km when the odometer froze due to a software glitch in the odometer chip in the computer. I fought for months with Toyota Canada and finally got the final word, "it's not a software fault, it's a software design feature". They never thought anyone would have the knowledge or the cheapskateness (new word here) to drive one that far so they never bothered to fix the glitch. We racked up over 350,000 km on it when a gov't rebate program made it economically difficult to keep on the road.
I've told this before but I had gone into the Toyota dealership in Nanaimo several times to try and get them to "fix" the odometer problem and they refused each time. So When we bought our "new" 2007 Jetta in 2008 I drove it up to the window in front of the Toyota manager's office and marched in and told him to look at my new car. He was speechless. I'm ashamed of how good it made me feel. NOT! Stan

Looks like old Evel is about to paste that last dealer supplied bus. Sure looks like the Mr. Bubblehead logo on the side. Someone restoring it today is probably thinking how did the damn roof get so dented???
