I figured it was time to add this car to the project board. After all, it is an ongoing driving project that will likely never be completed - are they ever whilst you own them?
I replaced the balljoints a few years ago and the steering has been very stiff ever since. I have been contemplating replacing them again because of the stiffness, so took a look at them tonight expecting to find Chinese garbage. They were made by Meyle in Germany, so they don't appear to be junk.
I also adjusted the steering box at around the same time to take up the play in the steering.
I want to fix the problem, but am now wondering if the steering box could be the problem. My Bentley manual talks about removing the plastic plug in the steering box to top up the oil, but I can't find a plastic plug so have no idea what the oil level is.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

I researched this last night. Then after posting, I answered my own question when I read this: www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=653095It's rather sad when you've bought the decent German stuff to find out that the cheaper Brazilian stuff apparently works better. It looks like more new balljoints are in my future.

Meyle is junk. They just box up other companies crap and sell it as "Meyle Germany". I would be very surprised if any of their stuff is made there.

I emailed CIP1 this morning to see what their "German" brand is. Still awaiting a response.

Same here. I need to get the bus back on four wheels and running before I tear into the Ghia. The other problem is time. A full time job, two young kids, house reno's and a university course don't leave me with much spare time for my cars right now.

Santa arrived early this morning in a big white Fedex van... CIP had a good sale on these and I needed a pair! Slowly getting the bits together to start surgery in the spring, once I get the work done on the bus that I want completed. Merry Christmas everyone!

That should keep you busy for awhile... Lets see who can get their Ghia back on the road first. I have a LOT of things lined up for mine...

Time, I could totally use some more time in each day. Oh, and space. Can I please have another three car shop so that I can actually spread out and build?

I pumped my steering box full of grease the fluid was leaking out. I find it hard to believe the ball joints would make it that stiff break it apart and find out where the resistance is.

One of your Beetles has balljoints? Are they new replacements?
