Agree, this is great!
Do VW generators need to be polarized on a regular basis, or is this just something that needs to be done if it has been inactive for a prolonged period?

Volktales wrote: The ones on the left are the common 1971 and later style points that are likely stashed in a million gloveboxes. The early style is on the right, and the only difference is the direction the wire is attached to the point and the terminal style on the end. In this case I carefully removed the wire from the burnt points and installed it on the replacement... Given that there have been many problems with Bosch points and condenser quality lately, I elected not to replace the old German condenser. Thanks Russ, I've got a set of points that I picked up at a VW garage sale and wondered why they had "Beetle Autostick" penned on the box. It must be the wire as the points themselves look identical (Volktales' pic below)

Polarizing a generator is only necessary if it has been disassembled, has been out of use for a long time, or you are unsure of its history. It is not necessary to polarize an alternator, by the way.

Dare I say, "awesome" Russ! Wow, lotsa great info here, especially for us "beetle engined" Bay owners I am starting to think we should all throw into a pot so Russ can one day publish a book on tips, tricks, hints, and techniques. I know I'd buy a copy… especially if it was illustrated with Russ' pics

Reagh and Rob came down to pick it up. The Tercel is in the garage for a wax job, and then the type III will move in and likely stay there for some time... And isn't it about time Goldberg came over to visit me???

And there it is all done. Apparently it made it home to Reagh's in one piece so that was good. Now all he needs to do is wait until the spring to drive it again!

Thanks for restoring the photos. I intend to talk Reagh out of that DC some day. It will be good for him to have some pictures to remember it by. :-)
