Hey Paul I sent a PM. I'm setting the timing at 7.5 btdc at around 800 rpm, I also did a static timing. Lean huh hhhmmm, that's easy to fix with jets. Now I've got another list for tomorrow Hahahahaha.

I will let those of you with way more experience with modified engines offer the advice here. Did you set your timing with the vacuum advance disconnected???

I set the timing at 7.5ish btc at about 800 rpm. What do you set it at with the rpms up in the 3500s, 32 btdc ?? I set it with vacuum connected.

The magic number seems to be a maximum of 32 degrees overall with the vacuum line disconnected. Basically rev it until it does not advance any higher then this. Others say 30 degrees max, and some say 28 to be on the safe side. When checking timing at idle, in theory there should be no vacuum at idle, and no need to remove and plug the line. It is good practice to plug it however, in case there is a slight bit of vacuum present which will operate the advance unit and throw of your timing adjustment...

Verify timing first, check for any vacuum leaks, make sure not too lean.

SUCCESS!!!!!!! Finally got the engine straghtened out š I am going to tell the short story because I've spent the last 3 days trying this trying that, adjusting this n that, anyway you get the picture. Yesterday I pulled the plugs to change them out because at this point I was trying anything, well only 2 looked like they were firing so I spent the rest of the day thinking of the cause of this. So then this morning I pulled off the valve covers to have a look and wow, they were all in the same place as in none of them were depressed... Which is wrong hahaha. After doing an adjustment bamo she fire's right up and purrrrring like a kitten. So I'm not sure if I adjusted them wrong in the first place or something happened between then and now. To be honest I don't care... SHE'S RUNNING FANTASTIC !!!;!!

Glad that you are up and running! Before you go too far, I would definitely check your valves are all adjusted correctly. You really don't want to get this wrong... At least with hydraulics, once they are done, you shouldn't have to go back in there again...

I decided to finally take the ole gal for a nice long drive today after driving it here around town. I am basically happy with the results but I do think my timing is off somewhat, it seems a little sluggish in 3rd n 4th. She has lots of pep going up some pretty good hills but I still think there should be a bit more. After driving for a couple hours it felt a little tired or... it twas I who was a little tired, trying to figure that out haha. One more thing too, I am pretty sure I have to put another main seal in š. This is the first one I did not shorten the spring inside the seal, usually cut 2-3 mls off the spring before I install it. It hasn't failed me in the past but for some reason I didn't do it with this one. aaarrrggg

Yes, I take the spring out of seal unscrew it so it's one long piece then I use tin snips and cut off 2 mls of the open end. After that I twist the open end of the spring counter clockwise a little and screw it back together and replace in seal. There is a tiny fitting with threads on it where the open end goes on. I have never had a leak doing this. And I have no idea why I didn't do it this time and it pisses me off. š I got this information through a member of the club who was told to do this by an old time engine builder.
