I have driven a few Porsches. Mostly 911's, a few 924's, 928's, and even a 914. In my situation, all were tired examples, that needed MAJOR work to be even remotely nice again. They were disappointing to me. BUT then you must understand these were poor examples. How many of you have driven a truly FINE vintage VW? I mean an unmodified example in excellent original condition, with all the proper GERMAN made parts still on it. Cars like these drive so much better than average examples, that the difference is amazing. I have had the fortune of driving several customer cars over the years that are low mileage/well maintained originals, and experiencing what they really were like to drive is an eye-opening experience. I am sure one of those 356's, in like new condition, would have been an absolute joy to drive. You have to keep in mind to compare these to other cars of the same era. The above 356 featured a 90 hp engine. That would be somewhat more fun than the 40 hp 1200 in a 1963 Beetle, wouldn't it???

have you ever driven one?? Not an antique one no. I remember years ago researching them and reading about their notorious understeer (?). I have driven my son's 2011 911S though quite a bit and love it's power and handling. My wife hates it, says it's too noisy (tuned exhaust) and too rough riding. Also she hates the way I drive it. She says whenever I step on the gas pedal I become the devil incarnate . It's absolutely useless for anything other than going fast quickly, which it does admirably well. My son taught me the "look of scorn" you have to give the young kids driving jacked up diesel pickups, followed by the infinitesimal shake of your head as you look away when they pull up beside you and gun their engines.
