How is that for a loaded roof rack? This 1965 Manila Yellow with black roof version was the only car in the family at that time. Two boys in the back, with Mom and Dad in the front. AND all the necessary luggage for the multi-week trip to San-Francisco and back to Victoria, with sight-seeing throughout BC. This car was used like this on multiple long distance trips. And Stan will be happy to know that they often traveled via as many logging roads as possible when camping. Apparently it survived this treatment, and was kept for many years... That is Egon, the owner, and my brother in law is one of those faces crammed in the back seat. Not sure where this photo was taken, and you can almost read the writing on the Ranchero in the background. Don't know exactly when this car was sold, and if it had any hope of survival after all of its off roading experiences. Later Egon was one of the few people that bought a brand new type 4 VW. He didn't have a chance to bond with it however, as he rolled it on the Malahat not long after he bought it! I think that was his last VW, although he stuck with German cars later acquiring an '80's Mercedes diesel and an Audi which seemed to always be broken...

It's funny how we notice things that were seemingly insignificant at the time. In that first pic there appears to be an Amazon, an MGA, and a convertible Beetle. Driving around in those days was like being in a nonstop car show
