Hello everyone,
My wife and I are moving over to the island in the next little while and bringing a Karmann Ghia with us. Heading for mid island and wondering where the best place to get an Out Of Province Inspection would be?
Thanks all.

Well, let me ask you this. How good is your car? Where are you coming from? I have seen some Eastern cars that might pass back there, but are highly unlikely to pass here. Some inspection facilities are more lenient then others, but that would not be a problem if the Ghia is in fine shape...

I have always considered our car to be in good shape, originally a Fresno California car. I had to put it through an OOP test when we bought it 7 years ago. Its been in Calgary ever since.

If it is not rusty then than you are OK. These tests are safety related, so the brakes and front end will be gone through. Note that almost no shops will have the necessary tool to check the ball joints properly. What they will check is lights. Make sure they ALL work properly. The windshield washer is the number one thing that won't work on an old VW, so make sure it does. Some shops don't understand how the heater works on old VWs and will wonder where the blower fan is. What year is your Ghia???

Hello Volktales,
Thanks for the information.
The Ghia is a 1965, all lights work. I adapted the spare tire fed washer switch to feed an electric washer pump. Which works well. Apart from that I will adjust the brakes and grease everything up.

Welcome to the Island GC. I imported my 71 Ghia and my 57 Kombi from the UK back in 2006. I took them to the dealership (Harbourview Volkswagen) for the import inspection. They were very fair and perhaps a touch lenient - they passed both vehicles.
Looking forward to seeing your 65 and meeting you.

Looks like Gary got his Ghia inspected and passed. I managed to snap a pic and have a quick chat the other day near Slegg Lumber. Sorry for the finger, I was in a rush because my mum was in our running car and she really needed to pee(or so she informed me as I exited the car). Nice Ghia Gary, but that body ain't no 65. Low-light as confirmed by Volktales and CrazyBrit in person...Dyslexia makes it a 56, but I didn't take in what the taillights look like. Is the pan a 65 maybe?

It is actually a 65. The PO grafted on a lowlight front end. However the car runs like a champ, drives and stops in a straight line and sailed through the inspection without issue.
Hard to find a vintage VW that hasn't had something or other done to it lol ....!!

sailed through the inspection without issue. Gary, you mentioned it to me, but where did you end up getting the inspection done? Cheers, Don

Hello Don, when we first arrrived we were looking to buy a house in the Qualicum area ( that didn't work out!! ) but we did get our three vehicles inspected at Coast Auto Care. However the owner who had been there since 1995 retired last year. There is a new guy in there now (Brock) he seems really good very helpful.

Don, I just used Fountain Tire next to Slegg for my bus's modified collector inspection and they were really good.
