Now I'm into the next "hiccup". I ordered longer hand brake cables, but now they're too long. It turns out that I now need to shorten the longer 64-67 cables. Yet another order for CIP....

Ah. Wrong thread. That should have been in the bus thread. Oh well.
Has anyone ordered from CB Performance lately? I'm looking at their external oil atomic cooler kit. Is their shipping reasonable, both in terms of cost and time? How's their customer service?

Is their shipping reasonable, both in terms of cost and time? How's their customer service? Shipping is reasonable. Expect anywhere from 2-8 days for them to pack your order. Shipping prices and arrival times have always been good for me. Customer service, is generally excellent. If you're not in a rush, I'm in California in June and could bring it home in my bag...saving you shipping, taxes and duties.

I just did a order 2 weeks ago. They were faster than cip1 has been for me lately. It was 1 week from web order to the post office. Shipping was high but the prices for the products made up for it. I did have to pay a duty on my order when it arrived.

Not yet. I need to sort the oil lines and cooler before I can start it. I'm back at work today for three weeks.
Thanks for the offer though. I'll keep it in mind.

I got the bus started again today and was going to set up the carbs. I had it running a few weeks ago but it was way too rich, so I fitted up some smaller jets.
It started and idled nicely. I gave it a few RPMs, it picked up quickly and sounded good. Then after around a minute, copious amounts of oil started pouring from the top of the 3 / 4 cylinder head. I used the good quality cork gaskets.
I'll replace the gasket, but what concerned me was the volume of oil. This was a gush, not a trickle. Any thoughts / suggestions please?

Umm, valve cover leaks come from the bottom. Lots of oil from the top on the 3/4 side is usually something to do with the dreaded oil cooler...

Crap. There was a lot flowing down over the valve cover and heat exchanger. At least 1/4 litre in 10 - 12 seconds.
If it's the oil cooler seals then that's engine out again and no VW driving this year.

What would cause this to fail so quickly? I replaced the seals when I put the ancillary parts onto the engine a few months back. Is this likely poor quality parts, my somewhat lacking mechanical skills or just bad luck?

you may have used the wrong seals in the kit, some look the same. a few heat cool cycles now caused a leak. also may not be tight enough.just offer up some snacks and the gang will give it a pull. only four bolts right. shame to waist the rest of the summer sitting .

Time is the issue right now. With working away on call, I never quite know when I'm going to be home during my shift. Then when I get days off, they're booked up with family camping and stuff.
It's only three bolts and the oil lines right now. I always leave the 4th bolt until the very end because this is not the first time I've had to remove a freshly installed motor! It was an incredibly tight fit on the output shaft this time though.

I have a new Elring gasket set in front of me. It has 6 different types of what appear to be red oil cooler seals. Two are thicker than the others with smaller diameter holes. The other four are thinner but with larger holes and appear to be identical. Is it the two thicker ones with the small holes that should be fitted?
