Any hints or tips on an easy way to fit the bolts for the booster fan on the roof of the engine compartment of a bay, without dislocating your shoulder or worse, dropping a bolt down into the nether regions of the motor? Stan

Put an old blanket on top the motor, use an extension for your 10mm socket. VW designed it so you can do it this way. Unless previous owners have had their way of course...

Thanks for the hints Russ. I'm adding them to the million other hints I've read about and or learned the hard way during this restoration.
I found part of the problem was that the brace holding the "new" old fan had bolt holes that were a couple of mm closer together than the original brace. grrrrr. Had to use a chainsaw file to elongate the holes. Then I found the bolt that dove into the depths and hid in the depression at the bottom of the right intake manifold. (using skills developed finding over 11,000 geocaches in the bush) Got it out with a magnetic stick. Then had to take off the rotator bar that joins the two carbs, whew!. Finally after 2 hours got both bolts started and tightened. The extension with a 10 mm socket wouldn't go "up" straight enough to get a decent grip on the bolt head. That's one hour per bolt. And you all wonder why this restoration has taken me 5 years so far?
I really like working on bugs rather than vans. Stan

VW did alter the mountings slightly to accommodate the blower fan on injected buses. Maybe your replacement bracket was for that model...
