I bought my first car when I was 15. A friends brother had a 72 super (hangs head) beetle. It looked good, all black with a gold racing stripe along the bottom. The most I ever did was drive it in my driveway. It had been in an accident and dog tracked real bad. I guess I kinda caught the "bug" then. It was 15 years later when I traded a vehicle for a 69 fastback. My first engine transplant. It wasn't till 2000 when my ex intro'd me to "the bus"! I thought she had lost her mind. I honestly didn't want her to buy it. She fell in love with it, and bought a 69 pop top, like Russ's red bus. I drive it one day, and that was it. There's just something special about being in a bus, drivin down the road, headin to where ever the road is takin me. I've owned a few since that day, and think I have owned 8 or 9 in the past 14 years. Gawd I hope this is my last one. Unless of course, I run into a whack of money, then I'd be purchasing a completed project. Until then, it's all about the learning.

Out of all my volkswagens, I believe Russ is drooling over my "fox"

That fox performed well, for $300. They even threw in a new CT lawnmower and gas can. A quick front pad change, new plugs and an oil change, any it took me to Prince Rupert and back, no problems. Sold it shortly after to a guy headed to Mexico. He said the head lights went out a couple times, but other than that, it lives and drives there. Well, that was at least five years ago .. Foxy lady

So I guess we all have some skeletons in our closets... I never owned anything like a Fox, but I did once officially own one of these once... I inherited one of these from my Aunt. It looked exactly like the one in the picture and was absolutely mint shape with only 25,000km on it. I drove it for two weeks while attending university and one time I pulled in the parking lot and there were THREE other Cavalier Z24s that were identical. That clearly would not do and I went back to driving my 1970 Beetle instead... My sister ended up with the Cavalier, put another 125,000 km on it and sold it when everything started falling apart... But things could have been different... The car my Aunt traded in for the Cavalier was much more interesting. How about an all original Canadian spec 1979 Rabbit GTI? Auntie would have sold me this car cheaply instead of trading it in. I am still kicking my ass for saying no. German built Mark 1 GTIs were not available in the US, and are highly desirable today. I still wonder if it has somehow survived, but I have not seen it since the mid 1990s... And unfortunately no complete photos of her old car have survived... Given GMs build quality, it is unlikely that Cavalier has survived either, but who cares...

My first daily driver…never mind me and my sister spoiling the picture Notice the Baja insurance sticker in the windshield. On the dash is my stuffy Toucan who accompanied me everywhere(and I still have him) hiding my powered "Walkman" speakers, the only kind of stereo I could afford.

I gave that tire cover to my mum, when she owned the Westy, for her Birthday! Yes, the whitewalls are dirty, but look at those nice white wheels and bumpers…fresh paint I think! So I was trying….

I have just signed up - I guess Salt Spring island could fall in the "mid island" zone... In any case, I am an air cooled VW enthusiast, mostly into busses, but I have a 67 beetle that I'm still struggling to make into a daily driver as well. My first bus was a 65 kombi that I camperized and took on an epic ski trip around the US... in 1978. I just dug up a couple of old pics of that bus, what memories... Got back into busses about 6 years ago - first a 65 standard, then a 67 21 window, and just about to get started on my third since then, a 67 kombi - original Vancouver island bus! Will be looking for parts and have some stuff to trade as well. Cheers, Michael

Welcome to the site Michael! Quite a collection of Buses you have there. You certainly got back into ownership in a big way! Not a lot of Splitty owners here so I hope you can post up more pics of your projects and completed Buses. Maybe even start your own thread Cheers, Don

Well that is more of a historic overview... The top pic was taken in 78 - no idea where that one is now... The 65 standard was sold to Peachland just over a year ago to fund the 67 21 window build... ...And that was sold a month ago to Chicago. The new one is not yet on the road, but will keep me out of trouble this winter. Attachments:
