Thanks for the suggestions...they all sound terrifying in one way or another!!! But, the amount of rum it would require to choose one of the above, means thanks but no thanks. I guess a turbo and some slicks for the 2270 beetle this spring will have to suffice. I'll get an audio recording from one of Terry's 1/4 mile passes, then use an ipod and headphones to get the full sound effects.

Maybe just get a vintage speed exhaust and you won't even need an iPod. You can listen to the sweet flat four roaring away! I expect to see some posts in the "Speed Demons" section when it happens

Love your sense of humor PICTUP..."sweet flat four roaring". I've always enjoyed the unique and sweet sound of the flat four, but I was referring to the audible and physical THUNDER of a big block 8. For those that have had the priviledge of racing an original muscle car, especially back in the day, there can be no substitute. We'll have to figure out a way to let everyone experience the difference. I'll bring the 2270 bug and the 86 mustang gt, to Thunder in the Valley one year and let everyone try them both. Then we can all decide which one was truly terrifying in a good way. Just a thought???

I always thought that the difference between a 2270cc flat four and a big block V8 was about 20mpg?? It takes a lot more horsepower and therefore money to get the front end of a Yank mobile off the ground on takeoff. The best part of doing it with a VDub, is that the guy driving the V8 gas guzzling monster doesn't expect to eat rubber.... Said by man with the 1600cc Ghia...

I used to have a stock , run of the "mill" (351W auto) '68 Mustang and it went like stink , shoulda' raced for pinks more than a few times , I would have definitely acquired a nice stable of Detroit iron , but I think you would have to spot me a quarter mile against yours hahaha!

'68 Mustang...cool, still have my 69 cougar vert, with a stock 351W auto. Just enough ponies to have fun at the street lights and tons of passing power on the highways. Think I'll wait 5 more years, then punt it to Barrett Jackson and get 3 or 40 more veedubs. hahaha. The '86 Mustang GT is a family pass down, so I have to keep it. Besides, it has 300,000+ miles on it and still going strong.

I think that I would have killed myself in my early years if I had something with that sort of power. Having a VW with minimal crash protection was probably a good thing - given the possible ridiculously fast alternative....
