Well, it has been an eventful 24 hours. First at dinner last night I got the call that I need to move my boat from my shop. For me, this is beyond stressful. I tried calling Russ to let him know that his planned attendance for today probably wouldn't be necessary because all I wanted to was to avoid life. He reminded me that that was not possible and I'd better get things organized because he was coming over no matter what I said.
True to his word, this morning Russ arrived and work began. I wasn't really working on enough sleep, but managed to sort of pull it together. Luckily I am not the brains behind the work, but I can sort of follow direction
While I worked on making heater box gaskets from Ratwell's site Russ started to put the heater/exhaust system together. I was able to make the gaskets in time for them to be immediately put to use, so no pics. But here is a pic of the engine as it was turned upside down on the stand. All the joints went together with muffler cement on all faces of the gaskets. At first they are all loosely assembled. Putting the lower tins on helps to keep everything aligned. At this point my homemade heat shield had yet to be slightly modified to fit(which took some time with many trial muffler fits)
At this stage trying the muffler in place is a good idea. In this case we had to figure out how to tweak the muffler to allow it to actually fit the flanges. It required blocking the end of the muffler under a 2x4 clamped to the front porch supports and a 4 foot steel T bar post stuck in an end of one of the inlet pipes. No pics again, but you get the idea I am sure. It did finally fit for the most part
Next step was to put the transaxle and axles in
Then came the engine. My good friend, a very talented retired shipwright, happened by at just the right time to lend a hand in getting the engine from the stand to the behind the bus with the jack at the ready. It was a relief to get that step outta the way
The mechanic at work prepping the bay, and a bit ticked-off that I was back there snapping a pic
I did actually do some work on this today, but you'd never know it….
The set up to get the engine up into place. Turns out my jack needed a booster…I should have consulted members here before buying it
Really looking like something. Rag was there to protect the paint from the battery. By this time it was 8pm and the battery did not have enough oomph… maybe tomorrow
