Friend in Victoria is pulling his hair out trying to get brake pressure, and I'm out of ideas for him.
Early to mid '70s Beetle. Replaced the Master Cylinder (I think he's tried 3 now) and all wheel cylinders.
New lines as far as I know He's tried adjusting the rod from the pedal to the master cylinder
There are no fluid leaks that he's been able to see. He ran a new front to back brake line outside the tunnel so he's able to see the whole thing.
He's got a pressure bleeder, and the system's fluid is clean and clear. When the bleeder is on, he gets good pedal (which makes sense to me), but once removed there's no pedal.
Any ideas/suggestions? He's got plenty of wrenching experience on Bugs but he's at his wit's end.

Try clamping the lines to isolate the problem, if you clamping all 3 and no pedal than it's likely the master. Buddy on the Victoria forum had the same problem and by clamping he found 2 crappie wheel cylinders.

Sooo many crappy replacement parts out there now. Are the drums worn out with new shoes? Cheapo shoes can flex causing low pedal. Adjustment waaay off?

I'm pretty sure he said he'd adjusted all the shoes properly. He's been maintaining and daily driving Beetles for years and I assume he's got above average technical knowledge of them, but never hurts to revisit the basics.
I passed mitchy's suggestion on to him earlier, we'll see if he has any luck down that avenue.

Last time I did all four drums with a new master, I had to lock all four wheels with the adjuster stars, bleed the brakes, and then readjust the brakes.
Otherwise, all I got was loooooooooong pedal.

Every good brake shop used to have a shoe arc machine in the corner nowadays one size fits all.

The good thing about the four lug drums is you CAN lock the drum with the adjusters completely as Dave mentioned above. I have had to do this before too. Harder to do with the wide fives due to having only one hole in the drum for access. I am having a similar issue with the Ghia and the disc brake conversion on the front. No air comes out and the pedal pressure feels normal, but the pedal is just lower than I would like it to be. This is with the recommended dual master cylinder, and the rod is adjusted correctly. Still irritated about the window glass issue, so have not investigated any of this further...
