It just ran really really bad; started off just not wanting to shift properly. Then, the car started to shake a lot especially near the end when I returned home. I think when I backed up the car into the driveway, it finished it off.

That old clutch was the type without torsional springs. They are very rough in operation as they lack dampening during clutch engagement. Your particular example was likely poor quality CIP junk. You were not side stepping the clutch at 7000 rpm, were you???

7000 rpm? sounds like a starter motor with no load, not a VW.
