I have finished my car but still come across the occasional problem. My last bit of work involved installing a EMPI HPMX 40 carb. It has gone well for the most. But I have found out that the carb has a very weak spring and will not close by itself (without help). I have found that I needed to install a small bungee cord that closes the carb. Once I did that and was able to re-adjust the carb, it was working significantly better.

Hey Ron could there be any issues between the gas pedal and where the throttle cable joins the carb linkage?

In Early Bays I have been witness to the tube, where the throttle cable goes thru the fan shroud, having a groove cut in it by the cable. Once that was sorted out the cable worked a lot better and no helper spring was necessary.

Is an old VW ever finished?
Canadian Tire and Lordco both have a good selection of springs. I had to replace the springs on my dual setup with heavier duty items due to similar problems. I also had to replace the one that pulls the throttle pedal back up as it had disintegrated.

most times heavy springs are a bandaid on a broken arm. rusty worn pivots on linkage, kinked or stressed cables, corrosion inside the(bent)tube, rotten flex tube..... any or all can cause enough friction to cause cable hang up and high idle issues. the automatic response is to add more spring to get it to return and bam your problems gone right??? not really....the heavy spring is just overcoming the friction points and sawing its way through until something is compromised and the cable snaps (not good) or jams (worse). of course you lost that nice factory crisp, light pedal effort vw gave you,and now you got and on/off pedal feel. my humble advice is to get the cable action as smooth and as slippery as you can by eliminating all friction and slop as you can from the pedal assembly back to the carb(s). a good test is to have the cable disconnected at the. carb(s)and have a helper push the pedal down while you oppose by pulling back on the cable, should be silky smooth and easy to pull the pedal back up with your bare fingers. remember what kind of return springs the factory put on these cars, not a lot is needed if all is well with the system.

Everything Mitchy says is true. The problem PICTUP mentions is quite common and have seen it many times. The cable conduit between the chassis and front engine sheetmetal seems to go AWOL a lot too. Many times the aftermarket carbs just don't line up very well with the existing throttle cable guide tubes which causes more issues. When new, the stock setups worked beautifully.

I never thought of this stuff. I just recently replaced the throttle cable (after it broken when I was coming out of the Buzz Coffee Shop). I will check everything. Maybe even replace the peddle assembly. I know that I do not have the throttle peddle return spring - rusted off. Thanks for the tips.

Scott is a customer at the shop. Interesting guy, always funny. And he hassles the service manager so that is good!

I bought myself a timing light at Canadian Tire the other day. I set the timing on the bug at 30deg BTDC at 3000 rpm. I found out that my timing was off by quite a bit. Now that I reset it, the bug is running so much better. The HPMX40 carbs are so way much better running on the car than the old pict 34 was. I am glad that I made the change to the new carbs. There is definitely more power than before.

I had my clutch disc break apart the other day. Didn't think something like that could ever happen (came out in about four pieces). Replaced it with a racing clutch disc now, and I hope that it was just a bad part and not something else. Time will tell.

Was there just a big bang(!) and it wouldn't work, or what exactly?
