Hey, the boots on my 72 swing axle beetle are leaking, i have already started some work on replacing them but am realizing why they offer the seamed boots. Just want to confirm if it is or is not possible to change the boots with oe style without removing the transmission..
i have one of the vw manuals but it doesnt offer information on swing axle boots, only cv style. and the only info i can find on youtube and google generally defaults to the seamed style.
Thanks

One of the guys on this site did in fact install those seamless boots. For some reason the pictures did not display for me today, but that might be different on your device. Here is the needed thread... miacvw.proboards.com/thread/1333/winter-coming?page=3Hope it works for you. You must have a Canadian Custom model. Interesting cars!

I have done a few sets of seamless OE style boots it's pretty easy. But like said above axle tubes must be off of the car. Split boots are fiddly with all of the screws and nuts, so I actually prefer to do OE style seamless boots. Remember on slpit boots to clock the seam at 10:00 or 2:00 so it can flex. On that note the German style soft rubber boots are only good for a few years. The cheap colored vinyl cheap EMPI off road style boots are very dry and durable. Don G. (Pictup) has a good story about those boots.

I went with traditional black on my 62 SC and yes, crazy as it may sound, the cheap EMPI ones were recommended to me by a reputable engine builder in the US as it was his experience that they lasted longer than the "German" ones.
