Seems every year I dig myself into a frenzy of changes. I ve tried a lot of things on this poor bug, mostly because I lack a version of this car that I would like to stick to. I ve bought so many pieces from various vendors and am always trying to improve my knowledge base on VWs. Most "upgrades" I have done have been very successful in being both utilitarian and esthetically pleasing.........to me anyways. Every time I put something on my car I can feel a little bit of don and russ's soul die inside. I have however noted quite a change in both of them in the older years, they seem to be more accepting of me and my vw shinanigans! SO!!!!!! I ve been trying to think of a way to start this thread that would be beneficial for everyone...not just downloading pictures and leaving it at that. I ve got a great pool of info from everyone here and I wanted to share all the info here. This bug has become more of a group effort from Russ, Lanny and even Darren K. I welcome all thoughts and questions here, and I will always offer my time and efforts to help any of yous guys with your projects. If anyone wants to see the project in the real you are all welcome to come and see! You ll have to make sure its a good time for Darren C though. OK.....on to it than. the only way to start is exactly that! I ll post as I go...and I ll try and do it in chronological order. CHEERS DUDES! surfs up

BACK FROM LANNY!! the windows rolled up the engine was both reliable and running better than any vw I had ever owned, it drove smooth and I can even hear the am radio!! this set up right here was the most reliable and smooth running that it has ever been. not lowered in the rear and not narrowed. I can turn, make corners and go over every speed bump and hill!! also ran very well in the snow....lol

OH YEAH!!!!! DON made me that cool aluminum spark plug wire feed! thanks again yo! I also remember this fan shroud fitting perfectly and snug to the stock engine and cooling tin. When I bought the repop stuff because I wanted it to look cool with the no heater outlets....temperatures went to shit! I had to grind down a bit of the bottom of the shroud in order to get it to sit right. even doing so it still didn't cool as well as the stock 36hp tin.

this right here is one of my fave setups to date. ran so very well, smooth, and never had to worry about a rad racer...errrrr I mean a man hole!!! 1776 dual 40 empi hpmx....which I ll get into later...67 tranny and stock height rear and stock width beam with adjusters! big tires too! Full MSD. This set up took me everywhere...literally from tofino to sombrio Victoria, Vancouver traffic, Port hardy, trips to Mt Washington and Whistler....wonderfully reliable motor. OH....also ran best with the 1 3/8 header with the dual exhaust. Only thing with this set up was to check the linkage every now and than.
AND YES!!!! I ran this set up for years......until one day.....I thought I would put in the stock motor as My daughter Avery was wanting to drive it soon....upon driving the gutless pos and other stock engines cars I decided I could never go back......enter COURTENEY!! one of the guys that got me reading more and more about the joys of punching out a flat four case! Upon meeting him I bought a 1914 from Chris on airspeed, it had not been running and needed to be gone through. With Courts help and Jerry DERKSEN....repeat....JERRY DERKSEN, I was able to get that 1914 rebuilt and running. Pig on gas and ran stupid hot! for sure not my fave. liked to sip gas too! not very cost effective as a daily driver.....SO Court offers up his pride and joy parts that he has been collecting for a while! Kroc heads 82mm forged racing crank and many more goodies! I guess you can say this is the point in which it all gets...a little more complicated! [p
[/p]
at this point the motor was waaaaaay too much for this car......ran hawt and the temptation was always there to pin it! fun as hell....but I needed to do something else....hmmmmmn..this?
lol....ended up in this for only a few months and that many passes....
here s a picture of the car with the bigger engine....stopped at the dam to check the temperature and let it cool off a little......I took it out onto the higway!

set of 44 webers helped with the 1914 and also the 2276. IMO...I would rather run a newer pair of the empi HMPX rather than a busted up old rebuilt buy some guy with a dremel set of webers....maybe its just the webers I have, but IMO they both need to be maintained and gone through just as often. 1914 with the awesome new fanshroud.....engine lid up trying to figure out why its running so hot! I switched to 10w30 and that seemed to help a lot! still though...always nervous about the temperature now its time for the dropped spindles and narrowed beam!!!
