I originated in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). Emigrated to Canada in '74 with my family. Lived in Kitimat for 4 years and then Cranbrook for the next 19. Took early retirement at 55, returned to Southern Africa for the next 10 years and then spent the last 8 years in Cornwall, UK. I was a VeeDub fan from the start and bought my first beetle in Rhodesia.....a double back-windowed 1950 job that didn't have synchromesh in all gears. That was my favourite! Since then I've had at least 20 other VW's......vans, buses, beetles, Jettas and a Polo. I like the older vehicles as I find the more modern versions too soft. Having just arrived back in Canada after being away for 18 years, I just bought myself a '92 Jetta....which I now find needs a little attention.... My call sign is gogga which is an African Xhosa word meaning 'bug'.

Baie dankie. Nice to have contact with someone from my neck of the woods! My Afrikaans is nie goed nie......but my Chilapalapa is better. I was going to go to the gathering tonight at South Mall but got home too late to catch the bus.....my Jetta needs some TLC before I trust it on the road. Are you/family in the Nanaimo area?

Welcome to the site. If you have any pictures of your old VWs we would love to see them! Although we mostly discuss the older air-cooled VW's here, many of us also own or have owned water cooled VW's as well. I still have a '92 GTI, but have not driven it for some time... If you have any VW questions, we might have the answers...

Thanks.
Unfortunately, no early photos......in the 50's and 60's keeping wheels on the road took all my spare cash.
At the risk of treading on toes (sponsors?), can anyone recommend a smaller or private VW repair chap in the Nanaimo area? My 92 Jetta needs some attention and I don't have the facilities to deal with it at present.....and I can't afford, nor does my car justify, the fees normally charged by an official VW agency.

Welcome to the site Gogga! As a response to your inquiry, I would recommend Bavarian Imports on Kidson Rd.. Their phone number is 250 729 8993. Tell Klynt at the "front desk"(it is rather informal and quite unlike the protocol found at dealers), that Don from the Mid Island Air Cooled VW forum sent you We here don't have any direct affiliation with them, but they have been good to me. Maintaining a good relationship with such repair facilities not only stands us in good stead personally, but it builds a stronger community that looks out for one another. Good to have you aboard. Cheers, Don
