Found a picture of the world famous Gabriola Coffee Bug...
Yes it was world famous because a picture of it appeared in Volksworld a few years ago. This VW really was a Gabriola landmark. The owners used to bring it to the shop for major work. I once had the "pleasure" of rebuilding the engine in this thing (a dual carb type III). The Coffee Bug unfortunately met its demise several years ago due to massive rot in the chassis and suspension structure. It was based on an early SuperBeetle and was deemed economically unviable to repair. I remember the handling was rather interesting when driving it...

Looks like it had Split bus rear wheels. A colleague had a photo of this vehicle on it's last journey, as his background on the ship's PC for a while.

I would say it looks to have had 14 inch Bus wheels in the rear which were the norm from 63(?) onwards to 1970. In 71 the bolt pattern changed from wide 5 to 5X112. Earlier Bus wheels had more squared off vents. Like these: Were Bus wheels able to take a wider tire maybe? I don't remember their width, and I don't know what width Beetle wheels were. It is a lot of weight to spread out!

Actually, I think it had chevy rims with adapters on the back. Note the non-VW hubcap... I don't miss working on that VW at all...

Why did you sell that Single Cab Don? It was fabulous! It was…and I was crippled every time I got out from behind the wheel I could have switched out the beam to the 68 ball joint one I have(after narrowing it the 1" and lowering it the 2 1/2 " with drop spindles to make it look like a Splitty beam), recovered the humpback seat, and got it painted all at great expense for collector plates, but I figured something better for me would be on the horizon someday… and maybe it is(nuff said)
