Has anyone tried one of these fancy new thermostats? Cip1 and Concept1 sell these instead of the original style. They're not cheap at over $40.

I posted this and then realised that there is actually a location for technical questions in the "Technical" section. Imagine that?! Don, please can you move this and my alternator query into the correct location for me! Thanks.

Those thermostats are highly NOT recommended. Apparently they fail in the cold position causing your engine to overheat. The original ones failsafe in the hot position, so your engine cannot overheat. Many threads on the Samba about this. If you want an original one that is fully rebuilt, look up "awesome powdercoat" in the Samba search...

Thank you Russ, I'll remove the Crappy Import Part from my list. I pulled one off my parts engine. I presume that if I dunk it in boiling water I should be able to see it expand? Other than seeing movement, is there anything else that I should watch for with one of these?
My other option is to continue on without the flaps that have been missing on both of my vehicles since I bought them!

If it's still good the accordion pleats will be tight together when cold. If it compresses at all when squeezed it has failed.

OE thermostats are still available. I've got one in stock, but we're not giving 'em away. $135. Genuine VW. Brand new in box.

i use a heat gun to test em,these are air cooled motors and are allergic to water.be sure to mount it in its holder so you dont over expand it(and ruin it) clamp the holder in a vise and warm it up watch it enlarge and contract!! cool! i use the same method to test the rest of system when installed, flaps, rods etc. warm it up with the gun cool it off with the air hose. i work it several times to limits hot and cold so i can drive with cooling system confidence

Great suggestions - thank you! Mine is toast. I like the idea of a brand new one, but I need to see how much I spend elsewhere first. My other option is to run either without flaps or with the flaps secured open for the time being.
