For some reason the highlighted portion of the link takes me to Parksville. For those that want to see where Terry is actually at, you have to put Black Creek after the address in google maps. On another note, I finally saw my first live google car the other day as it cruised the highway thru Ladysmith. Gotta love this Orwellian society that we all seem to have passively embraced

Had a great time at your place today Terry…A BIG Thanks! Some pics…. Terry's 65 and his, um, 56(?) Russ' Bus (the road trip vehicle of choice), and Candice and Ron's new addition, their 1972 Bus with an upright motor transplant. It's well done too! Russ and Ron get their bearings while the Boss makes sure they do it right

So myself, my lovely wife Rebecca, my bored kid Victor, and Mr. Bus himself (Don) made the trek up to Terry (Stude)'s house near Saratoga Beach. The weather was nice for the drive up island, and given that we took the '74 Restfalia, we elected to drive the old highway at a slower pace. Terry's house was easy to spot, as it was the only one with cool VWs in the front yard!
First up is Terry himself showing his vintage 36 HP engine. These engines are different then later VWs in several ways, one of them being their unusual pushrod and valve lifter design. This style features the lifter solidly attached to the pushrod, and this type can be removed in one piece without splitting the case. Now Terry's engine had an interesting issue...
See how the adjuster on the second from the camera rocker is at the end of adjustment? Something funky is going on in there...
And this is what was found. One "S" shaped pushrod! That valve must have been stuck at one time or perhaps the engine inhaled a gulp of water? Terry had some spare pushrod/lifters so everything will be all right...
More pictures to come shortly...

Next up Terry showed us an interesting rust removal setup... Get yourself some molasses from an animal feed store (used as hog food), put some in a plastic bucket at a 9 parts water, 1 part molasses. Then put in your nasty greasy yucky parts, and leave them in there. It can take weeks for the chemical reaction to complete, but check out the results...
Terry hosed off the molasses goop and the parts shone like they were just made! We did find out later that the parts must be immediately cleaned thoroughly and dried or flash rusting will occur. This process was cool and I think I just might give it a try. If you have a big enough container, you can even dip doors and fenders in that stuff. And it is very cheap too!
Terry's dog Jackson kept a close eye on the proceedings. Brent's companion Goldberg could be a relative...
Terry's on-line name is Stude for a good reason. This is his rough but complete 1939 Studebaker Champion sedan. This is his parts/reference car that he acquired after first seeing it eons ago.
A little bit crusty, but all there. Parts cars are the way to go if doing a major restoration (like Terry is on his other Studebaker)
More to come, but Photobucket is crawling tonight, so might be a while...

On the road for 29 years, then off for the next 47! Victor and Rebecca clowning around next to Terry's restoration project '39 Champion. Meanwhile Don is checking out Terry's antique engine... Built in 1910, this two horsepower single cylinder engine was quite cool. Note the intake valve has no rocker mechanism. The very weak valve spring allows the valve to open on the intake stroke due to the vacuum in the engine. The exhaust valve is operated via the visible rocker arm. The top of this water cooled engine is cast like a bucket around the cylinder. Your fill this bucket with water for engine cooling, and when the water evaporates you can add more! Rated at 500 rpm, this could be considered a high speed engine for that era. Can't remember what Terry said this engine originally powered... Old engines like this featured exposed crank, rod, and gearing. Only the combustion chamber was sealed... Still more to come...
