From and ad on thesamba: "With these fitted you increase the air flow blowing up towards your windscreen through your air vents, If you have good heater boxes they will push the warm air up for better heating and defrosting."I have these fans in my Canadian delivered bay window bus, sure the suck air into the van from the front vent at 2 different speeds, but they do not augment the heating system whatsoever. I've often thought about somehow modifying the ducting system to make them pull the heat along, that would be awesome. Also, are they worth $240? www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1799134

No. Someone is full of BS. Those fans will do nothing for heating/defrosting at all.

I have one of these boosters fitted in my Split. Because of the long, exposed heater pipe run I don't find much noticeable improvement in the heating over stock. The bus is also quite voluminous, so it would take a lot of heating up in really cold weather - so I leave it in the garage in the winter. However, the booster makes a considerable difference to the airflow to the screen. The down side is having to cut the heater pipe under the floor, but I figured that was preferable to knocking dents out the front panel from the object you didn't see through the misted up windscreen! www.bluebird-type2.co.uk/Split%20bay%20interior.htm

The "ambulance fans" are in my opinion, one of the most over-rated accessories out there. Because of the way the vents are designed, it is hard to get them to blow much air at your face anyway. They also draw a lot of current in operation, and will make the radio volume go lower! I seldom use mine; the vent wing windows are much more effective at getting air into the bus...

I agree, but be sure to wear your sunglasses if you have them turned right around. Why? Deflected bugs hurt even at Bay speeds Much like Mark, my experience with an in-line fan I installed in, now "Ricky's" Bus, resulted in rather dismal performance in the winter. I agree, it probably had a lot to do with the space there was had to heat, keeping in mind it had no headliner. It helped a bit with clearing the windshield but not a lot. I had installed one years ago in my 70 Westy when I first got it. I seem to recall it working much better, but maybe that was due in part to the smaller open space with the cabinetry. In my SC the heat works great, and I don't think it is just because it is a small space. I am pretty sure it is mostly because I have the stock muffler set up which also scavenges heat from the rear manifolds, unlike the header/extractor set up. When the heat is full on it blows out bordering on…. very warm This what I installed in "Ricky's" Bus(yes, I did actually hook it up):
