Back in 1974 when my parents were first married they were driving an extremely beat up '60 beetle which my dad had picked up for something like $40. Living on Lasqueti meant the car would sit for days or weeks on end in the marina at French Creek. My parents at that time were very broke and couldn't afford the expense of a new 6v battery, so my dad located a crank start dog pulley bolt off an early car, cut a hole in the apron and bumper, and made up a starting handle. He could then crank start the old 36hp on cold damp mornings when the aging 6v battery didn't have any oompf left.

I've rope started a Vw industrial engine on a sawmill many, many times. It's actually pretty easy.
