Well, after replacing points, condenser, oil change and gaskets, setting valves, it sucks to find out there's gas in the crank case. When I was removing the valve covers, what I thought was oil, came pouring out. Then I realized, hey, it's only 3 degrees out and this motor hasn't ran in eats, so this ain't oil, it's flowing Way to fast. Then the smell hit. Gas! Couldnt believe the amount that. Came out the other side. I read on thesamba, that it's probably the fuel pump flange, or pump. It's also damp where the carb meets the manifold. So much for getting to drive the new bus today. Am I missing anything else I should be checking? Anyone else encountered this problem?

I read one time that a well worn old vw parked with a full tank and the front end elevated for some time can syphon from the tank through the worn fuel system and into the crank case!?!?

The original fuel pumps had a valve that only allowed fuel into the carb when the engine was running. Aftermarket fuel pump don't have this feature, so if your carb needle is bad you could get an engine full.

I had that siphoning trouble with my 2.0L that I put together. My solution is not likely to win me any awards (an might even be laughable) but I installed a Ford truck tank selector unit. When my ignition is on, the tank selector pulls from my active fuel tank. When I shut of the key, the selector chooses the other line, which is hooked up to nothing. It helped quite a bit, but let's hope your problem will not persist.

So, I got the problem of gas leaking into my crank. I placed vide grips on the gas line from the tank! Was gonna pull top of carb off today but ... the freaking weather kept me from it. Hope to find some time and weather in the near future.
