So Sunday was a bit of a busy day. Don (Mr.Bus) and myself got up early to make a trek to Quadra Island to pick up something quite special... BUT, before we could do that, we had to go get something else along the way... It seems Don had sold a fuel pump a few years back to a guy named Chris, for use in his '77 Westfalia. Chris had kept Don's number, and phoned him up to say he was moving and the bus was now for sale. Well we just had to go check that out, didn't we???
And there it is. It turns out I had met Chris before and traded him some bus glass for a bug windshield. Note the Bug hood in the picture. It is from the infamous Gabriola Coffee Bug! Bus has an interesting history and Don can tell that tale... This bus was largely complete, but in a state of semi-disassembly. The price was very reasonable and of course Don had to have it... Good thing we happened to have a trailer with us already... Getting it out of the garage and ready to load was no simple task however...
All the latches for the various panels had been removed, the slider door and hatch were not attached either. Fortunately a previous owner had bagged and tagged all the fasteners, so a quickie reassembly job was not all that bad. Un seizing the brakes took some time as well did packing all the parts into the bus. I named this one the Edmonton Eskimos bus after that interesting stripe on the side...
Don seems happy with his latest Bay... Good thing the neighbours were friendly as we needed help pushing the bus out onto the street.
We had hoped to drive it out of the garage as it was one of those "running when parked" vehicles. The stale fuel had unfortunately seized up the fuel pump, so this will have to be dealt with before the engine runs again. The engine at least did not seem too messed around with, and was very clean and leak free. It started easily on flammable brake cleaner, so hopefully will be OK.
Loading on the trailer took awhile, but we got there in the end. As usual Don did most of the work, while I "supervised"...
The FJ is normally a great tow vehicle. There might have been a wee issue much later in the day...
Reagh agreed to store it for awhile which is very nice. While there, I couldn't resist a shot of his latest find. Interesting rims on this SuperBeetle...
So we are not even halfway through the day yet... See part TWO!
