Hi, I think I may have done this already, but it's been a while, and I couldn't remember. So, let me do it now before I get more involved. My name is Sara and five years ago my nine-year old son bought a 1969 Westy for $950, using his own savings (thus the moniker "VWMama"). He immediately joined the VVWC and named himself "VWbusboy9". I think he may have been one of the youngest members to own his own bus. LOL. Over the years, he and I have muddled our way through the restoration process. The first efforts were simply to get it running and install seats. Now, i learned to drive in a 1969 VW bug, but I have no experience with air-cooled engines although I've always had a love for VWs. This has been a really steep learning curve for me, although I consider myself somewhat mechanically inclined. And I definitely slipped and stumbled a few times. I still have a lot to learn but together, my son and I have made wonderful memories and had great adventures, both on the road and in the shop.
Well, I got to thinking, it's running and he's 15. In a year or so, he'll be driving and I have delighted in driving the bus so much that I needed to get my own. Ebay and Craigslist and Kijiji and Samba were failing me horribly and prices were astronomical. I didn't want to do another resto, so I finally went to see a local guy who ships restored buses out to France to ask him if he knew of any for sale. I figured I'd try and get one before it was actually listed. Turns out he was selling his 1970 Hanover Conversion Mfg. bus. He'd decided to sell it only two days earlier. I originally wanted a splittie Dormobile, but realized that was likely not going to happen, particularly one in good shape (at least that I could afford). When I saw the Hanover, I actually thought it was a bay Dormobile, the profile of the top is so low. Once I saw the interior, I was smitten. It took all of five minutes before I agreed to purchase it. All original inside, and set up perfectly for me to go on road trips and do my writing. And, being over six feet tall, it's ridiculously high pop-top suits me to a T!
I just wanted to say hello again and give you a rundown of my history. I had the pleasure of meeting Karl (sorry if I got the spelling wrong), Reagh and Rob, and Russ yesterday. What an awesome day. It truly is VW heaven around here, you just gotta have a friend that knows where to look. Your stories were an absolute delight and I loved every second of it. Thank you for welcoming me so quickly and kindly, and I look forward to getting to know you all better. This area has definitely become a scheduled stop every time I'm on the Island.
