I just replaced my stop light switch in my 65. It has the upgraded dual master in it. Got the three prong unit from Bavarian and install went fine. Problem is now every time I push on the brake pedal, it pops the far left fuse?? Never did this before. I thought maybe the 2 wires were on backwards and reversed them. No help. All of the fuses in my car are the white ones. Don't know where to go from here? Any thoughts? Jason

Take both wires off the switch and touch them together if it blows the fuse something else has happened somewhere else. Why did you replace the switch? OK Russ you're next!

The left fuse on a 1965 Beetle controls the brake lights, horn, signals, and wiper. Originally one two prong switch was used on the single master cylinder. Dual master cylinders were equipped with three prong switches, the third terminal was wired to the warning light on the dash. I think that the centre terminal was for the warning light, not sure about this. Do you have both switches wired up, or just one of them. If both, are the terminals the wires attached to the same? Did you replace the old brake light switch because it did not work? Possible now that it does, it is do to a short in the brake lights. Do what Tony suggests, and see if the fuse still pops...

I replaced the switch because the brake lights quit. Tested it the usual way and nothing. I still had signals and running lights. The replaced the switch.

T master was already upgraded to the dual switch version. It only has the two wires and they were plugged into the old front switch. I was told that since the running lights and signals still worked, that it wasn't an issue with wiring out back. When I replaced the switch, I plugged the two wires into the opposing terminals. Didn't use the center prong. Tested them with key on and they were fine. Two days later I went to take it out and not working. Every time I push down the brake pedal it immediately pops the fuse with or without the engine running. #confused

Your old switch is probably ok. Sounds like someone worked on something and got wires mixed up somewhere or the wire leaving the brake switch has gotten grounded somewhere between the switch and the first brake light or between the two brake lights. Try taking out both brake light bulbs then check with an ohm meter if you have continuity between the wire leaving the brake switch and a good ground , if you have continuity then there is a ground problem on that wire. Just my 2 cents....

There have been many reports of brakelight switches failing quickly now, although I can't say I have heard of one shorting out, but you never know. Your taillights feature two bulbs. The upper bulbs are the turn signals, the lower are the taillights and brake lights combined. The signal and taillight function are activated independently from the brake light circuit. The brake light switch supplies power to the brighter filament in the brake light/taillight bulb. If the brakelight fuse pops when the brakes are applied, then either the switch is faulty, the wiring from the switch to brakelight bulbs is faulty, or one of the bulbs themselves is faulty. Remove the bulbs like Tony says and see if that fuse blows. If it still does, then the wiring or switch is faulty. Try disconnecting the wires from the switch and using a test light, see which one is the power supply. Plug that wire back on, but leave the other one disconnected. If the fuse still blows, then the switch is faulty. If it does not, then the wiring between the switch and taillights has shorted to ground. Hope this helps...

Heya, did you get this resolved? Did you do the 12 volt conversion yourself? You say that all of your fuses are white. Does that include the one that keeps popping? I can show you what I did to my bug if you re stuck.

I haven't looked at it for a couple of months, but everything worked fine before replacing the switch. I'll try taking the bulbs out etc, but I have a feeling that I may need a new switch.
