Hey all. I have a 73 1700 dual carb. I've been fighting some fuel issues. I rebuild the carbs with an empi kit and still having issues. I can't seem to get it to idle well. I've been fighting with this for 3 years. I've had it running great for a few months then it will start running pig rich. I've always been on top of valve adjustments, fuel filter changes. Carb is clean. I have a 009 without vacuum. I have extensive mechanical knowledge for modern cars but this manual, adjust, carb, points. Stuff is starting to get to me. I just chase my tail in circles, checking the things I've already checked. I don't have a dwell meter. I've been checking the timing but it seems to change on its own.
Well... I was wondering if someone wanted to come have a look with me, I will pay you for your time. I can pay with money, beer, food or poorly told jokes or any combination of them.
Please someone help!

Don't know where you are based, but tomorrow is our regular meeting at the Southgate Timmies in Nanaimo around 7:00pm. We can talk about the joys of carburetion on these old buses. Common problems with the original units are worn out throttle bushings, and electromagnetic shut off valves that are loose in the bodies. Those will certainly play havoc with your fuel mixtures. Have you read up about the central idling system and how it works? If you don't already have it, get the green Bentley manual (the official VW repair manual for this era of bus)... If you are unable to make the meeting, post up some good pictures of your engine compartment and maybe something will be apparent...
