On a different note I got a little more work done today. The cylinders are lapped in to the heads. The head's I got are the ones that don't use head gaskets which I've not worked with before, hhmm. I also checked the piston ring gaps, and all is well there. I got to use my new fangled tool that I got last weekend and it works slick as shite !!!!!! The picture below shows kinda how it works, I've only removed and installed rings by hand in the past which was always a little nerve racking š This tool opens the ring while supporting it all the way around which is nice.

Well gentleman I will never try and polish intake port's ever again unless the head has no value guides, valve seats or anything else on it !!! I sanded the ports to smooth them out so the fuel air mix would swirl nicely into the cylinders aaarrrggg it took half hour to do so and then 2 hours of meticulous cleaning to get all that crap out of the ports, top and bottom of the head OMG. Half can of carb cleaner two tanks of air!!! I didn't stop cleaning until the brĆ nd new white rag picked up absolutely nothing. Ugh

Well done Rob - I'll be calling on you when i'm ready to build!
That tool is pretty cool too. Nice to use it right after getting it. Most of us would have that tool sitting around for months / years before using it.
Your commitment to fearlessly building your skills is admirable. Well done! B

More progress on the engine, the pistons and cylinders are installed. And after crunching the numbers I have a decision to make on the compression ratio. Without head gaskets the CR will be 8.25/1 and with gaskets the CR will be 7.7/1. So more power vs less power but more longevity. I'm pretty sure it's going to be longevity but I'm not totally convinced yet. Next is install exhaust and intake studs on the heads and by the time I'm done that I will have made up my mind.

Never seen pistons like that with the cutouts in them. How come your #2 and #3 cylinders switched themselves? I was told that the cylinder heads with the "gasket" surface cast into them did not require head gaskets like the originals did. Was also told that the compression ratio would be too low if the cast heads were used with the gaskets. I do not have proof of this...

Where to start Russ hhhmmm ok the number 2 piston is in the number 3 spot because when I wieghed them the #3 rod was a bit heavier than the rest and the #2 piston was a bit lighter than the rest so it made sense to me to marry those two together. The numbers on the piston and cylinders were just references. Whew one question resolved. As for the cutouts in the pistons, AA pistons came like that so I am just going with it because I don't have a choice and I'm told that's for valve clearance, whew!! Ok last but not least the gasket question I am going to find out tomorrow if can use gaskets on these heads, if not then I'm going to remove cylinders and put another shim under them to bring down the CR. If my memory serves me VW engines CR should be below 8. You are correct about the these heads not using gaskets but my numbers tell a different story with after market pistons. But like I said I need to find out from the manufacturer of the heads. Whew!!! I think that's it Russ

More work done today š. I got the heads on, the oil cooler on and the oil filter housing. I am going to need a few days of sunshine here soon so I can take out the old engine , tranny, gas tank and shifter linkage. I'm swapping tranny's to a late bay one and I also have to clean gas tank, and while I have all that out I might as well replace the shifter bushings. Fun fun.

waiting for sunshine. I can relate! Keep on keeping on and you'll have that thing in there by driving season.
