I have been holding off posting anything about my newest(last summer) acquisition because I have yet to really do anything to it....but Russ has told me I gotta, so here ya go:
I bought this Squareback sight unseen, violating what should be my rules when it comes to vehicle purchases. I had just sold my Riviera camper so instead of socking that money away and using it to work on my other stupidly big project cars, the look of this former desert race support vehicle caught my fancy. Goddam internet. I really gotta stop looking at these darn computers... The rationale was that I needed something to replace my Iltis which I don't really want to thrash off-road.
Anyway, so now that I have it, I had better get to doing something to it. I guess I could just drive it, but I can't do that on the road because it has yet to pass inspection. Being from the desert, it has some tinting on the windows that needs removing, but there are a few other things that need fixing, mostly electrical in nature. Since this car has anything but stock wiring, I have decided to try to figure out what all the wires do and try to draw a wiring diagram. Ambitious? VERY! I have no idea whether I will be successful with this endeavour, but I'm gonna try.
Spare tire removed, ready for cleaning.
Some labeling of the fuses was done, but it is rudimentary. Plus it is covered with overspray from when they painted over the Savannah Beige with the lighter tan. Luckily after this pic was taken I was able to use lacquer thinner to remove the overspray and actually uncover labels written in what could be ball point pen.
I took off all the tie wraps and black tape from everywhere to try and follow the wire colours. What a mess. I hope I can put it back together nicer.
I'm gonna need a speedo cable, and I might just go back to a stock speedometer considering the aftermarket one was just stuffed in the hole with no bracket to hold it in place. In fact, the gauges and clock just popped right out. Good for fixing, not good for driving
