So tomorrow is the big day on what is considered to be the first major "local" car show of the year. The weather is expected to be hot and mainly sunny, which will be a change from very cold and windy last year. Don is taking his shorty single cab, and I am going to bring the '62 Beetle. Brian and I were expecting to bring our Ghias, but this did not work out. Mine is still running hotter than I would like, but this pales in comparison to Brian's reason for not coming. It seems he decided it was time to have a heart attack instead! Fortunately he is recovering well in hospital, but has some extra parts installed, specifically two stents. According to his wife, he was extremely pissed off as he would miss the car show!!! Hope you get well soon, Brian. As this is the second VW person I know that has suffered heart problems this year, get yourself checked out for artery blockages!!! Hopefully I will be OK for awhile...
Anyway I will take a bunch of pictures as usual and post them up later...

Sooo, it was up bright and early this morning to head off to Qualicum. I decided to take the '62 Beetle and encountered an "issue" on the way. The performance on the Parkway seemed to be struggling at first, and getting up to 90 km/h seemed harder then usual. Then I noticed that the trees were bending towards me... Headwinds while driving an old 40 horse ARE significant! Fortunately the direction changed a bit later, and normal speed was attainable... Once arrived at the venue, we waited in line on the side of the road. Don led the way in his '65 shorty split. But look what was behind us... An early P1800 Volvo. This was just slightly newer then the Jensen assembled cars. Very cool it was too. 1964 was the year. My Ghia is the same year, model, and colour as this Volvo, and would have made a great contrast if parked together. Both were considered direct competitors at the time... This old Chevrolet truck was nicely restored, and I liked it as most of these models seem to be modified nowadays. Don liked the vintage "traction" tires on the back... It took quite some time to park up in the final spot today. Eventually we made it. Mr. Green Chevy pickup owner was less then impressed with the VW's parked beside him, yet he was wearing a shirt with a vintage VW bus on it... Getting pictures this year was tough! LOTS of people everywhere meant you had to be fast. First up was this '67 GTO with a big fat inter-cooler jammed in behind the bumper. Why? To feed what I thought was a massive turbo, but is actually a belt driven supercharger! Not my style, but would likely be fun to drive... Don liked this Metropolitan; one of several in a row. This were sold as Nash and Hudson models, as well as just Metropolitans. British built in case you did not know... Dad brought up his Ute again. He claims he loves driving it more than his other cars... And then I spotted it! Finally a Corvair! It has been many years since I have seen one at a show! Not my choice of colour or finishing, but I just loved those lines. Maybe someday... Lots more to come...

This old Studebaker bus was kind of neat. The interior is just a stripped out hole at the moment, however. Don spotted a boat so he just had to go look at it. This thing was weird, as those tires are part of it, and it can propel itself overland. That outboard was massive too. Don said this "Sea-Legs" boat is very big bucks! And now some V-dubs. This is Tony's old '53, now owned by Peter. He has been doing a few things to it as well... A few accessories have been added since I saw it last time. The builder of Tony's other Beetle, the '61, was also present today too. A close up of the tail pipe extension... Car was looking very nice... This '65 single cab was here in the past, and is owned by Harry. He is the same person who has some other nice VW's including that low-light race Ghia. I took this shot of a 1958 Chevy Bel-Air, because I have worked on and driven this car recently. The interior is likely my favourite part. These '50's American cars are always cool inside. These two Camaro SS's are both 1967 models, and both with what looked like original paint. My Mom once had a white '68 RS convertible similar to these... This is a British built P6 Rover, the 3500S model which features an all aluminum V8 originally used in Buick applications. These cars are very innovative, and were actually designed to house a gas turbine engine which never made production. Now that would have been cool... Don can't understand how I like both little VW's and giant boats like this '68 Impala. I like a lot of things... Just your average old Nissan truck with a small block Chevy in it... This was not the weirdest conversion however. How about a PT Cruiser with a 440 Mopar engine stuffed in it originally from a Jensen!!! A couple of Olds for Clay. Too bad that beer gut got in the way... Nice Datsun 510. Shame it was the four door model... Nice and clean engine compartment... Way more to come...

This '56 Chevy Bel-Air was nice. The 55-57 Chevrolets are always very popular. This old Dodge was one of those fake patina vehicles, but the rust had been done better than most. Can't believe I said that... This very bright green AMX was nicely done, and part of a display of several AMC performance vehicles. Although not shown, another bright green Javelin was parked nearby and featured the worst bodywork I have ever seen at a car show... Shawn Cole has this single cab as his shop truck, and features a satin paint job. The vintage unrestored Schwinn bikes in the back were cool too. Victor was working today, so missed seeing the JDM stuff. I know he loves these Skylines. But then who doesn't... Lots of goodies in these models. How does twin turbocharged and all wheel drive sound??? Actually this whole line-up was Nissan vehicles... The JDM Silvia is a model that I like too. The kid will also appreciate this Integra. Real Integra type R's are worth some pretty big bucks now... This Jetta is owned by Wrapture Customs, which is the shop across the road from Bavarian. He handed out all 500 business cards at the show! More...

This Triumph was a rare model with "Surrey" top. Red line tires do it for me... The owner of this '61 Beetle just moved here from Ontario. He is going to go for the modified collector plates when he registers it here. Wayne and Allison brought this Beetle up from one of the Carolinas and have done much work to it... This was the only Porsche 911 that was in attendance this year. Not my favourite 911 but it was nice to see it there. This was a 1964 Beetle, and was unusual in that it retained its original one year only seat covers. This is extremely hard to fine on this model. 1964 seat material was very fragile, and most have long since disappeared. Apparently the car was stored for decades and is low mileage. Owner lives in Nanaimo too, yet I have never seen it. This is explained by the fact the owner says he almost never drives it. I may or may not have a few VW's like that... For a change of pace, how about a big old Mack truck??? Nice details up close too. For a very long time one of these was in daily use in town as a dump truck. Don liked this yellow '65 GTO. It was quite nice... Yet another nice looking '58 Chev. I would take an Impala version in Turquoise, myself... This '37 Ford was one of several there today, although this one had the brightest paint job. This 1959 Beetle has been around in this format for some time, so the new license plate is quite appropriate. Yet another '56 Chevy hot rod. Sooo many hot rods... These fatty fender '50's Fords are fine! I have always liked these Dodge Darts. There were a few at the show today. Don questioned why I wanted to take a picture of this '59 T-Bird. This one needs to be lowered... He also says I should fix up my old Chevy truck like this one... These Oldsmobliles like this were once very common. I liked the basic shape, and check out the interior. Looks like Westfalia wasn't the only company into plaid back then... Interior of a very old Mercedes diesel that was belching gobs of smoke out the back... Don and I both liked this International Scout parked just outside the show grounds. Real or Fake? Never got close enough to tell, but that roll bar looks a bit suspect... Another early Beetle, this time a 1954. Don said it is owned by Mike from Victoria and there is a thread about it on The Samba. Looked quite nice. Engine was nice and tidy... So was the interior. I like seeing some newly completed cars out there... Continued...

The luggage area was quite nice too. Note the "fuel gauge", the graduated stick on top of the tank. Shawn's Anthracite Beetle is back in his possession, and he has put his own theme on it. I have seen this '69 Thunderbird in the past, and still have a thing for it. Less the white top of course... Like new stuff? How about a Dodge Demon? If those previous Challenger Hellcats were too tame for you with their piddly 707 horsepower, then get the Demon. A supercharged Hemi puts out 840 horses!!! And I even like the colour... Or just get a 40 horse Beetle. This 1962 beauty is at this show every year. This Beetle was listed as a 1973, and appeared to be a modified Canadian Custom model. Don spotted this Mercury pickup outside the show. He learned to drive in a similar truck to this. More to come...

Don liked this big Mopar product. We both liked the interesting shade of green. It was pretty subtle in the shade, but when hit by the sun... Nice glow! As usual, there is always cool stuff outside the show. Like this very nice '39 Ford Deluxe coupe. Nice fatty whitewalls. Also a nice '55 Thunderbird parked outside the show. I am not sure if the show fully sold out this year, as there was some room still available on the road we were parked on. And finally, this '72 Westfalia was parked on the roadside and was for sale. Was fairly original including the 1700 engine with the one year only oil bath air cleaner. Info if anyone is interested. And yes it has rust... Anyway that wraps it up for this year, and next year it will be the Ghia that makes the trip. For sure. Probably...

Thanks Russ. I was up in Kelowna this year for the father's day thing. The family gathering went well. The highlight of your pics looks to me like the green 52 Chev pickup. My first vehicle. I guess you never forget your first. Stan

Those above "flickr" photos are nicely done. Shame the photographer was not really into VWs...
