I am going to install a sway bar on my bus. I can get an NOS OG one for lots of money, or a heavier duty aftermarket one for considerably less.
I have aftermarket on my KG with gas shocks and it's a very firm ride. Does anyone have experience with aftermarket sway bars on buses please?

Long ago I put the heavy duty Sway-a-Way front and rear bars on my 70 Westy. I felt it handled better, but I have since read that might not have been the safest thing to do because the ultimate stability of the Bus could have been compromised(the bars giving a false sense of security). Of course that was an IRS suspension and you have swing. IMO, the engineers at VW designed the Bus to have a motion with stock equipment that allowed the driver to feel what was going on, giving the driver a chance to not push beyond certain limits. I don't know if a stiffer single sway bar might throw all that design out the window or not. I would think if you beefed up the front, you'd perhaps have do something to the rear to compensate. But that again would perhaps lead to that false sense of security as I noted above. If you had lowered your Bus and done away with the swing axle, I might be tempted continue to modify to redesign the ride parameters when it came to sway bars, otherwise I say spend the money on the OG and know you are in sync with the engineers. Just my opinion of course,

Thanks Don - I am inclined to agree with the stock suggestion. I am trying to establish what the diameter of the stock one is, to get a comparison against what is being sold new. I've found one NOS, but it's in the Philippines and the shipping is more than the part itself. Then factor in taxes and import fees...$$$$
If I stay with the stock rear end, then I would go with a camber compensator, rather than the sway bar at the rear. Mid America Motorworks are selling a generic one for Beetles and Buses. I've been asking some questions on thesamba and this seems to be the way to go. I still want to get my top speed up though, so that I can cruise better on the highway, so those reduction boxes may have to come out again.
If I go with the OEM NOS sway bar, I'll tell Kathy that Don told me to buy the more expensive one!

You guys just go do whatever the heck you want, or whatever your wives will allow you to do.
With these types of comments, I start to understand why our local VW community does not thrive. Anyone else out there feel like being the admin on this site? I give up. Geez.
