It did go very well. I am FAAAR too tired to put up the pictures tonight, as I may have partied a bit too hard on Saturday night... Brent convinced me to go camping this time, and lets just say it was quite the experience... Will start the pics tomorrow...

Poor Russ ......................... So ya, we headed out Saturday around noon. I had my neighbors and friends gather at my place before heading to pick up Russ. We decided we would do a casual cruise up the Old Island Hwy. No rush as we were suppose to meet up with other VW owners for the actual Bug Jam cruise at 3:30. I suggested we stop for tacos at a lil stand I stumbled across on my way back from Hornby, earlier this year. Kinda cool, as another van pulled in who was from Nelson, because he recognized my friends bus from Vancouver. Needless to say, the tacos were a hit ...

We were basically the first ppl to arrive at the Info Center, so it was nice to chill, and watch others slowly arrive. Quite the turn out this year. I believe we had about 20 cars last year, and this year it was just under 50 Mitch showed up in this dune buggy, and had a quick bs with Russ a bit confusing at times, but they managed to put on a nice cruise, which included a drive down main street, a cruise past the Fair Grounds, out to Comox Air Force Base, back thru Comox, finally arriving downtown at the old Canadian Tire parking lot for pizza.

This year the club worked it out that we got free camping on the grounds of the fair.. I was quite amazed at how many ppl actually came out to camp. Once Russ got comfortable, off came his slippers and out came the Crown Rebecca couldnt make it because there was no air conditoning, showers, or valet service, lol

Sunday morning was the show.Wish I had pics, but Russ cooked up a storm. Probably trying to rid himself of the over indulgence of the night before. Thanks again Russ, for doing all that. It was awesome. I believe i heard the numbers of 40+ cars last year, and just under 100 this year. The Valley VeeDub Club were quite stoked at the turn out. A pretty nice day, to sit around, eat ice cream, look at cars, and the occasional peek and .... well, you know .. Rob showed up in his bug, yea! just a quick sample of the show, as Russ went out and took pics

for the second year now, I join a few ppl I've met thru going to these shows, and we head to Rathtrevor to end off the week with a lil pow wow, and relaxing bs around a campfire. It was a great time, and if you missed it this year, you should plan to make it next year. Special mention to HighTopRob, JIM, Robsannes, vwmama, beet1960, and the Klinks (who havent signed up yet) who made the trek up from Nanaimo

Thanks for those pics guys. It was a lot of fun! Now time for some more... After meeting up with Brent, Mike and Sue, and Sarah and Spencer, it was time to hit the road. That is Sue's Beetle in the pic... As Brent previously mentioned, we stopped at a taco stand in Qualicum Beach on the way up. When I ordered, I thought that given the cheap price, the taco would be quite small. So I ordered two. And naturally they turned out to be much larger than anticipated, but somehow I managed to get them down in record time. This turned out to be a good thing as explained later... While waiting 30 minutes for our food, I pondered on how low Brent's bus is in the front end. Great for those logging roads, eh??? Next it was onto meeting at the Info centre near the Inland Highway. This was where we found out quite a few VW's were going to be on the cruise... As Brent mentioned, we were some of the first ones there. This was to change shortly... Was not expecting to see a Type 34 Ghia in attendance. One of only 27 registered in Canada according to a sign in the window at the main show... I like the colours on this split bus. I quite liked this split I had not seen before. Yes it is a genuine 1974 Brazilian built 15 window. Cool! Continued...

Sue's '71 standard Beetle in front of a nice late bay bus. Then onto the cruise! I was unable to take pictures for this part of the event, but it was a nice cruise throughout the old downtown area of Courtney, then through Comox via mostly the waterfront route. Don would have liked the various old aircraft on display on the airbase. I would have liked the cruise to have been at a bit slower pace, as the person leading the event must have a speedometer under-reading by 20 KM or so!!! So before you knew it, the cruise was over, and it was time to meet in the former Canadian Tire parking lot. The promised Pizza was ready, and everyone was hungry and waiting. And, um, please sir, could I have a bit more? Maybe next time? I think the organizers were caught off guard by how many people actually showed up for the cruise. Oh well, there was lots of other food in the vicinity... Then it was off to the showgrounds for some overnight camping! Then it was time to set up camp. Sarah is being amused by Brent being Brent... Mike is getting ready to set up the tent. Hope it wouldn't be too cold in there... Setting up does seem to take awhile. Can see why some people love their big-ass motor-homes with pop-outs, and self leveling... Sue working hard to get that tent set up. Maybe another bus is in her future??? No campsite is complete without a Goldberg... "No I won't look at the camera for another stupid picture"... Then the party started. Lets just say there may have been a bit of drinking and other recreational stuff going on. I am proud to say our group of the 50 plus club, seemed to outlast all of the others into the night. A lot of "interesting" topics were discussed, and I even remember a few of them. I also discovered that my storytelling skills deteriorate significantly while under the influence... And my chair didn't want me to get up later,either... Anyway by the time the night was over, I no longer cared about not being able to have a hot shower before going to bed... The next morning arrived too early and all of us were surprised at how damn cold it became at night. Everything was drenched with a very heavy coat of morning dew. (no not THAT kind) It really was cold, and I was lucky my old jacket was still hiding in the bus. And Westfalia beds ain't very comfortable... I did make breakfast for our group on my vintage '70's Coleman stove, and served it on era correct plates too. Nobody heaved it up, so I guess it tasted semi-ok... Then it was time to break camp, and head across the field for the show...

And there we are, at the show proper. It was only a short drive from the camping field. Brent is even working on a mini-version of his bus. Lots of VW BS-ing going on, but that is to be expected... Several of the bus owners, put on nice displays. A nice '60's Beetle on display. Going to be light on the comments, because I spent a lot of time sitting in my chair on Sunday morning for some strange reason... Stayed awake enough to know that this was my favourite VW at the show. This '56 was nice and very original. Coral Red is nice, and this car deservedly won it's class. A vibrant mid '70's Westfalia. With the less commonly seen interior layout. Looks like the tunes just pound in there... May have been the only Super convertible there... Split was quite nice in grey. Engine was very nicely detailed. Spencer's bus has an interesting history and has been featured in a TV commercial, and a very popular Bollywood video as well! See if you can read the above... There were a lot of water cooled cars in attendance. This one was more interesting to me with it's very retro modifications. The 16 valve engine was highly detailed. Frank would have liked this peachy Beetle. And of course he was there with his Bug. Suuuuureee. Jim had his splitty bus on display. Wonder if he had a splitting headache that morning too??? This '60 belongs to Brent's buddy, and this car also has a TV history... Continued tomorrow....
