Yup. The Tercel project will soon come to a conclusion, so it is time to think about what the winter project is going to be...
Three candidates are available, and all need work before they can be enjoyed out on the road again. So what work is required???
1964 Ghia. Solve the damn overheating issue is the number one problem! This will initially involve changing oil relief springs and valves, possible oil pump as well. The valve geometry needs to be addressed as well. Some are suggesting to switch out the large pistons and cylinders, for smaller but thicker cylinders and make the engine into a 1776, instead of an 1835. If I get real motivated, it would be nice to repaint the roof, replace the headliner, install the missing trim in the front and rear windows, and generally do some paint rectification. How hard could all that be???
1966 Sunroof Beetle. Face the reality that this car will never be happy on six volts. Do a complete 12 volt conversion (including gas heater), swap Bendix radio for a 12 volt Motorola, investigate why the valve train is noisy on the cheap 1500 that is currently installed (replacing the 1600 single port with a cracked case that was previously there). Also some paint rectification is required on one quarter panel. If motivated the transmission should be pulled out and re-sealed... How hard could all that be???
1969 Fastback. Has been off the road for two seasons now, due to needing welding done to the front inner fender panels. It is tricky and my skills are not good enough to do this job myself. The replacement front fenders would then need to be painted good enough to match the faded non-original paint on the rest of the car. Then I would enjoy driving it again, as I really miss this car. The seats are desperate to have their new covers reinstalled however... How hard could all that be???
So those are the three winter choices; and I will be itching to start something soon... Any and all comments are welcome...
