Remember this one for sale on thesamba? I can recall seeing first the very strange puffed up 3D rendering and then the actual pics. I wasn't a big fan of either. Up close and in person, it did for me the same as when I saw pics. I am sure someone spent a lot of time making their vision, and the workmanship is pretty good(spent some time sanding those sides), but a few details were kind of odd. I dunno, was the painter going for Pacific? With so many great colours to choose from, you'd think a stock one could have chosen. Not a bad car, but I am sure Russ(a Ghia owner) would have something to say about it. In my mind, it went for a crazy price. As per a note inside, the car was tuned for 6000feet, so it might need to be retuned by the buyer A nice Coral Red '59 Beetle ragtop But why the decklid air intake? Because as Russ was quick to point out, it belongs on a Cabriolet. Maybe they were going for extra cooling considering the Okrasa big head engine with Abarth exhaust? I would have gone for this before the Ghia. Wonder what those Abarth exhausts sound like and what kind of handling one would get with those skinny tires and 'hopped up' engine? Then there was the rat rod 72 that could have been had for a bid north of $6500 Maybe an Ultramaroon stocker is more your taste? I can hear people moaning about those fender skirts from here. With the trailer set-up, I kinda like them. I know I am the odd man out. Then there was a go-much-faster mobile next to it. The 'patina' on this Thing wasn't fake, it actually survived a house fire

well I like fender skirts. if they were so unpopular why is it when they come up for sale they go fast. sets that need work $450 and up, NOS sets lately I've seen go $1200-1500 bones. yes, I have a pair.

I like the '59 in Coral. UltraMaroon is nice, but those fender skirts would be gone in seconds, along with that roof rack and trailer. Then the clear lens would be installed instead of those yucky orange ones. And yes I am picky... Don't like that Ghia at all, especially with the rims painted like that. The owner got a LOT of dough for it however...

How I would love to drive this 1964 FJ45LV. I once owned a FJ45, the pickup version, but I couldn't drive it comfortably due to the squished cab. This looked ready for a road trip. Who wouldn't take this Bronco home if they could? They are pretty popular these days. Always a favourite of mine the Jeep Forward Control 150. They made 170 models too which were heavier duty having a longer wheelbase also(as the 150 vs 170 denotes FWIK) Not an angle you see very often, probably because of what looks to be a narrowed front beam! But I think this was a completely stock. This made me drool a bit I must confess Look Russ, a Corvair in your colour!! Wrong body style though, lol! Went for some good dough Nice '60 A 23 Window with fried egg turn signals...huh? Oooohh,it's a Brazilian 23 from 1971 I liked this clean 71. Some minuses were: it had a black engine compartment(yuck), too much cheap chrome tin on the engine(I saw those online), and the one thing that drew my attention right away were the backwards mounted side marker lights(minor detail I know, but for $40.7K I would expect more attention to detail). Not a road tripper, but a nice day Bus...needs a swing table.. It was circle the wagons time...Airstreams are pretty popular these days(ask my wife how many times she's asked me about them) It is quite strange that there was not much in the way of B-J clothing that had VWs on it, especially considering how much Split Buses have gone for in the past there. The only thing I could find was this shirt that my wife would in no way ever wear. One more shot of a favourite At the end of the day, or the beginning for most too, you might need an electric pedicab. One of the guys I was with put his Handicapped Card to good use. There were acres(not hectares ) of cars.

So yes, Dave, I didn't just go to the circus that is Barrett Jackson...here is what we went to the next day. But oh my, the price estimates! It was much more relaxing though in a way with the soft music, a place you could get a glass of white wine(I think anyway, because I did not partake). We weren't there with any auctioning going on, and we got there pretty early in the day, so maybe I got the wrong impression. I did see one 'car guy celebrity' here, and that was Keith Martin. But he walked right by me and I thought,"who's that old guy that looks familiar?". Well turns out it was Keith. I googled him later and found that early last year he suffered a hemorrhagic stroke. He's fought a brave fight back by the sounds of things and he was there, so kudos to him. Russ doesn't like Split Buses, but I think he'd like this one. I think I recall that this is all original. Pretty sure Dave is taking a pic of the bumper sticker because his daughter in law is an RCMP...it reads: DARE to keep cops off donuts Sorry, cropping on my phone seems not to have translated to the final product very well And there I have to end it until I can get more pics onto imgur....

I like the Ghia. It's a 1960 Ghia after all. The colour is awful, but that can be fixed! I really don't like fender skirts and have no idea why people would pay so much for them. The donut bus looks yummy. Thanks for the photos Don. It looks like a great event.

Is it just me or do some of these prices seem high? I realise that some of these vehicles are particularly nice examples, but I thought that the market was softening. The prices here don't seem to reflect that.
Also, what is going on with that extra side trim above the passenger door on the 71 23 window?

Oh man, if you missed the actual Goodings Auction, you missed a treat. You know how at BJ's its a guy screaming into a mic, unintelligibly, with staff screaming from the crowd with an 'apparent' bidder somewhere in the room? I mean, I challenge you to figure out who is actually bidding on a BJ car 85% of the time. Now go to Goodings, they speak real english, generally know the buyers in the room, and have full conversations. "Oh Jim, add another ten. You know you want to, and cheryl (his wife) is already smiling at the thought of taking it home. No? Okay, another five then? Wonderful! The Bid is now _____. Bob, it's your turn...are you going to let Jim take it?" Lol, maybe I'm just a fan of the free peanut M&M's that come out for afternoon snacks Oh! And to answer your question: No. Wide whitewalls should not be on any Volkswagen. #unpopularopinion.

Ask someone else about the prices, because I am apparently too cheap to not comment on a price of a burger served to a captive audience I do recall reading somewhere, and Mr. Beetle was quick to point out, that trim is a VW do Brazil thing. I have seen a couple of excerpts of Goodings auctions on the TeeVee, but unfortunately time did not allow to see one in person. It would have been fun in some way, but I find it hard to relate to any of these goings-on because of the prices. My family never had much money, and for some reason I have never been drawn to people with it. I am much more interested in the history of the cars and it would be of most interest to me to meet the designers/builders/restorers. But the talent often lurks in garages far away from the "action"....just as the great amount that makes its presence felt here

I still have a bunch of photos to go, so I had better do a few tonight... The Gooding & Co auction tents were quite elaborate affairs with sliding roofs to let the potential heat out and the fresh air in. Being early made it feel more like a museum. There were even some trucks infiltrating the ranks here. I like stock FJ40's But this is what I really came to see, the Tucker Torpedo. Ever since the movie I have of course wanted to see one in person. And this was an actual movie car! As to how factual the movie was is anyone's guess, but there is no denying the cars were different and IMO pretty darn cool looking. Rear engined so what's not to like, lol! Apparently it went for a cool 3 Mill. Holy crap it's huge in there! According to Russ, that was advertised as a safety feature...duck and cover in the wheel well! Kind of bizarre. I think the engine lid wasn't closed properly That front headlight was supposed to turn with the car--another safety feature envisioned that never made it past the drawing board Someone didn't know the ride height that well, look at that dented oil pan Ah yes, the Acapulco Thing, made in Mexico of course! Isn't there one of these on the Island in the same colour? Some love these cars. Me, I prefer the Coupé Where's Tom Selleck? I know, not the right model or year(his was an earlier 308), but the right red(rrrrrr ) A little later than I'd like, but if I had the cash.... For Russ' dad What the heck is this, a Bugatti or something?? Nope, it is a Jag. However Nissan designer John Toom designed and constructed. When? Surely not 1956.... With the P bubble still strong, the barn finds aren't even getting a good wash... Diamond in the rough Not Pierre's car Note the estimate Now look at the window rubber closely. I guess when one has money, these things aren't a big deal
