1974 Volkswagen Bus window sash replacement question. At the end of last season my driver's side window crank made a disturbing crunch sound as I wound it up. The widow sash has sheered off, looks like the 10mm bolts are alright, BUT the old sash is really on there. How can I remove it safely? Any other tips for replacement? Thanks!

If it's not obvious yet, you have to pull the glass from the door...but after that: I use an Olfa knife, one of my smaller ones with flexible blade. Cut the rubber using multiple passes, following the glass down into the sash. Takes about 10-20 passes per side. Then the sash will remove relatively easily. After I've cleaned the glass, I use bicycle tube to replace the rubber. It can be a bit fiddly to get it all lined up because the tubes are molded in a curve, but its cheap (and it works). I put a light coating of urethane sealant (Proform PF224 available at lordco) on the rubber before applying to the glass for the final time, and to the sash before putting it onto the rubber. I then use some large wood clamps to hold the sash "up" on the glass, and c-clamps to compress the sash into the glass from both sides. ca.proformproducts.com/en/products/sealers/urethane-sealers/urethane-sealer-adhesive/If you wait a day or two, I'm doing new regulators and sashes into the '68 Beetle and can take photos of my process as I go. -Dave

I've never had a window that I didn't need to cut the old sash / rubber off...so they always come out of the door for me.

One other tip measure or mark where the sash sits on the glass before you remove the old sash so it will line up on reassembly.

Been awhile since I did that job on a bus. The vent window does have to come out, and the mechanism that raises and lowers the window will interfere with the vent assembly. Go slowly, as damaging things is not hard to do...

why not drill two holes on the outer edge opposite where there looks to be good metal on the sash after a sand down and then rose bud two welds

you got it. no need to remove anything. true not a resto, but up and running in no time probably good for many years. clean,treat with rust stop, sand , protect the glass from weld splatter, weld , paint.
