I have a used alternator with an external regulator that I am thinking of installing into my bus. I understand that I need to modify my wiring to make this work. I have two questions: 1. Is this a worthwhile upgrade over the stock dynamo? 2. Is there a way to test the alternator and regulator out of the vehicle?

Do you have a big sound system or anything else electrical that has been added to the bus? If not then the generator/dynamo is adequate. Alternators are superior at providing better current output at low revolutions. The "single wire" alternator with built in regulator is the simplest to retrofit, but that is not the one you have...

I believe you can still get your alternator tested at Canadian Tire, though you will have to put a pulley on it. As it's externally regulated, they will need to simply tell you it has output. Don't think the kiddos working the desk will have any idea how to wire up the regulator. I've only ever swapped generator equipped cars with internally regulated alternators, so I can't help you on the wiring side...but the switch I usually do is incredibly easy.

I went to C.T. five years back with a 13 year old Honda alternator , they couldn't make heads or tails on how to test it and said it's not compatible with their equipment. I'm thinking a 40 year old alternator will send them to the E.R.lol

Wouldn't A&B by the airport be able to test it?

No sound system at all right now! The only real upgrade are the halogen headlights. So it's sounding like I'm better off sticking with what I have.

If the motor is out...upgrade. If the motor is in, stick with what you have! That's my rule.
In my '69 bug project (long since sold) I ran a generator with hella H4 conversions, full stereo (4 speakers, 2 amps, 10" sub), and twin 80w rally lamps without issue. You just didn't want to run everything the car had at idle...
