Hey Mark I've got one that look very similar , works ok , it uses a lot of air! Check if your compressor will meet the needs of it.

I like the stand up models better due to higher capacity. A buddy of mine bought one of the small tabletop models and later wished he bought one that could handle objects like wheels. As Tony says, any blasting cabinet takes a lot of air output to work properly. My Dad's version is a homemade copy of one they once had where he used to work. Dad's large capacity compressor with a bigger than most air tank still runs a lot when using the cabinet. His has a fan driven cyclonic dust extractor so you can see what you are doing. The cheaper units will cloud up with dust very quickly. When properly set up, blasting cabinets make those crappy cleaning jobs and absolute breeze...

Wing over to Port Alberni and take mine for a test drive? When I need to blast smaller parts, it works great. I use a vacuum with a drywall bag attached to the filter outlet, saves the shop being filled with dust. The type of media you load into it makes a huge difference, and I swap between various types depending on the job. I once modified one to pickup media from a bucket on the floor, which worked better than the factory setup...but my current unit just runs the factory internal setup. Works well, just have to push the media around with your hand occasionally. Do I wish I had a floor-model for big parts? Yes. Do I have space for one? No. I've used Langley U-Blast for some stuff back when I was on the mainland, but the truth is, when I need to blast enough items or bigger items where a floor cabinet would be of benefit...dropping them off at Coastal Powdercoat turns out to be a great solution. I can do most engine tin, except for fan shrouds, or front and rear breast tins. Big compressor is a need, but I used to run mine off a small compressor. You just risk blowing the compressor...but in 8 years mine never went If you do buy one, make sure you buy a package of internal window sheets. There are replaceable sheets mounted to the inside of the lid, and you'll be replacing them often enough you need to have some in house.

Thanks Gent's. It sounds like contracting it out might be easier. I only have a five gallon compressor, which I don't want to replace right now. I like the look of the free standing units, but I'm starting to drown in too many tools and storage space is becoming a problem! Does Coastal Powdercoat do small amounts of small items?

I've never had a problem with small quantity stuff I've brought him. Even brought just two lower seat panels once.
I do tend to have everything powdercoated at the same time, but at least pre-covid he was open to sandblasting only. Things have gotten way busier since Covid, everyone is in their shop working on their projects! The owner is a VW guy though, and seems to have a heart for VW projects.

Mark about 20 odd years ago I went to Sharecost Rentals and they had an on site DIY sandblasting area, not sure if that's still available?!?!

I was told the Sharecost self sandblasting was discontinued when Covid hit.

I was told the Sharecost self sandblasting was discontinued when Covid hit. In my experience, it was discontinued years ago. I used the self sandblasting for a few big things(bumpers and wheels) and when they stopped offering it I started going to Island Truck for the bigger things. It seemed to cost more, but I could get the pieces epoxy primed which made it very worthwhile. Grant is a great guy to work with too.

Before Covid , I'd take pieces into the auto shop at the high school . Not sure what the restrictions are now. Remember - no running in the halls.
