After cruising the local back roads this past summer and then putting the Westie(71) away for the winter , I'm slowly getting back into shop mode. A couple of things on my list , are soundproofing and replacing the distributor - the currant one has points with the centrifugal advance mech. It starts , idles and revs no problem but the dreaded dead spot between shifts gets old pretty fast. I did buy an on sale cheapo electronic SVDA which caused me a lot of grief (I'll spare you the details) that has now been relegated to a box where it will stay till the day of my estate sale. Any suggestions for a reliable replacement would be appreciated . Also any tips on soundproofing material and its application. I know there's a lot of info on types of peel and seal , but if anyone whose had success with certain product , I be willing to give it a try. Hope everyone's staying healthy and able to keep busy. I've been trying to post some photos but some how IMGURRR has deleted my album - oh well , may all your troubles be little ones.
Cheers Bob

I would look for an original German SVDA distributor (used). There are some out there, but they are hard to find as I think they were only used for 1971 models. I don't have the part number in front of me at the moment, but it should be easy to find this on-line (the part number that is...) I have not done much soundproofing, but have read that Dynamat is good stuff (but quite pricey!)

I did a lot of research on soundproofing for my bus. From what I could discern, Noico is a good Dynamat alternative, but significantly less expensive. It is available on my least favourite online site owned by multi billionaire scrooge Jeff Bezos...
Note that I have yet to purchase any because it needs to be running before I get onto the niceties!

weld the distributors advance solid and wire in a CB black box. become the master of your ignition curve.

Thanks for the input - I'll keep an eye out for the dist. I checked out Noico - probably go with that. I noticed shortly after CraztBrit called out Bezos , he quit! I'm impressed. Got to do a little more digging on mitchy's suggestion -mmm.

Hmmmm Bezos didn't actually quit, he just kind of sidled sideways and said "here you take over the titular position for awhile" while I do some other maybe controversial stuff that maybe no one will notice. I wonder what's coming down the pike, maybe a political hammer on these ginormous multinational corporations that are so close to controlling everyone else's lives?
As to the sound deadening stuff, has anyone tried the black, very sticky rubbery stuff they put on roofs as underlay? If it'll stick and stay even on a hot summer's day, it might just be an answer. I'm going to give it a try on one of Betsy's door panels this summer. Stan

I've been warned away from roof flashing. Apparently it gets stinky in the heat. For the cost of Noico and the value of these vehicles, I'd rather buy the real thing.

The CB Black Box on youtube looks interesting. I had been hoping I'd be able to keep the original 009 dist. and somehow modify it to eliminate the glitches - this seems to claim do just that. Has anyone installed them? As far as the asphalt base peel and seal giving off odors and gas - blame it on the dog.

I found this review comparing the 3 best noise limiting material and here's what it says about Noico. "Noico Review Noico is different from the other 2 in that it’s asphalt based, rather than butyl based. Aside from any differences in performance, this has an obvious downside in hot weather because asphalt gives off a really unpleasant odor when warm. Just imagine that in your car’s cabin!" Evidently it has a stinky side also?? Anyone else found Noico stinky? Stan

i have one in my street beetle,my pal Ken (split bus with type4 power) has one (quite happy). I saved a delco tach drive distributor for a vintage vette (mech advance was beyond repair).put one in my buddies bbc tow rig that always pinged on hills with a load or was a pig when you retarded the timing, he claims a 4 mpg increase and no ping since the install/recurve. sold my pal on one for his 440 mopar project(factory appearing parts are n/a). I have one on the shelf for my turbo race car when covid is gone and i get to play again and one in the trunk of my porsche in case the rare and expensive bosch (turbo only) ignition box shits the bed. I truly don't understand why these things aren't more popular, they work on almost anything 12v,stocker, turbo, supercharged, nitrous, any style pick up, most amplifiers. they are inexpensive, robust, easy to install and tune. they will give accurate control with a 9x21 table (better than worn out springs ,weights and vacuum pots). if you are trying to save a factory distributor that's worn out but dont want blingy billet crap, its your answer. if you want better control for performance applications or need to get rid of a flat spot on a stocker and parts are nla....black box. i did a lot of recurve work on performance applications and propane conversions and if you were not on the money you had to pull the dist out and put it back in the test machine or guess and change it in the car , lots of trial and error and bending over the fender. with this thing you can tune on the fly like programable efi and dial it right in.

Hi Stan. I'd be interested in reading that Noico report. I understood that it was butyl.

I also run a black box on my dual carb 2017cc in my 56 and am quite happy with it.
